Is Final Fantasy/Square sinking?

I picked up Final Fantasy III(ds), expecting to be entertained and, to be honest, I am bored out of my wits. I can't remember the last Square game that I've played that seemed to have any soul to it. Possibly Final Fantasy Tactics Advance but there hasn't been hardly anything else since. The last Final Fantasy that even remotely enthralled me was Final Fantasy IX and only because it reminded me of the classic formula of Final Fantasy, only updated. Final Fantasy X did nothing for me, XI was dull, from what I hear about XII is that it is good but hardly outstanding. What the hell is going on with this company?

1). Dawn of Mana, Children of Mana, Sword of Mana....all three of these games were horrible, reviewed horribly, etc.

2). Unlimited Saga-I couldn't keep my head up playing this snooze fest.

3). Drackengard(or however it is spelled): A boring one-trick pony of a game.

4). Kingdom Hearts(gba): I played it at a friend's house and was not impressed at all.

....How many other people feel this way? In the 90's, this company seemed as if they could do no wrong but lately, I'm not so sure. I mean, even Sega has the occasional grand slam...Sega seems like they have a better track record lately than Square does!

You gotta be kidding me there, right?  I'm not a huge Square fan either (and I still haven't forgiven them for almost ruining Kingdom Hearts 2 with that ridiculous 5 hour prologue) , but to say that they are constantly putting out trash on the level of Sega's recent efforts (Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Virtua Quest, to name a few) is crazy.   And even if they were doing mostly bad work, it wouldn't matter, because everyone would still buy most everything they put out, just like EA.

If you want some really good Square games, check out Final Fantasy 4 and/or 6 for the GBA, or go back to Super Mario RPG for the Super NES.  Or get Kingdom Hearts 2 and pay someone to suffer through the first 5 hours before you play (trust me on this one, you will not want to do this yourself).

Check out Dragon Quest VIII or Valkyrie Profile 2 if you want proof that Square/Enix still has some oil in its gears.  Also, the word on the street is that Final Fantasy IV is being given the FFIII treatment and being remade for the DS in full 3-D.

The last games they released that were good were FF2/4, Chrono Trigger, and Secret of Mana.

It's been downhill from there.

Well, FF3 isn't really a recent game anyway. Flashy graphics aren't going to turn an old NES game into a modern RPG.

Then again, yeah, Square, and the Square part of Square Enix, hasn't really released any great games since FF Tactics, which is starting to get quite old now.

Dragon Quest: Rocket Slime (DS) is a very good game also, though obviously not really an RPG.

It's also an Enix brand, and Enix games have always been of high quality. Mostly. At least since they started doing RPGs.

Final Fantasy III DS is the best FF game so far. But I am from the old school where the older FF games are better then the cinema wannabe later playstation sequels.

Keep pushing with it and it will suddenly *click*. =)

Well, Enix did have a slight hand in Mischief Makers for the N64, that was a cool platformer (although a lot of that may have had to do more with developer Treasure).

Kingdom Hearts was among the best games of the PS2; right up there with God of War and Guitar Hero. You should give it another chance.
