Anyone collect Video Game music?

Postby Will » June 8th, 2007, 11:08 am

I'm a fan of film and game music.  I don't have a lot of game music right now; just the Medal of Honor Series (1st one, Underground, Frontline),  Black, and Secret Weapons over Normandy.  Incidentally, these are all Michael Giacchino's work (except for Black, which Chris Tilton mostly composed).  I would recommend all of these, by the way, ecspecially MoH.
Anyone else collect game scores?  What are your favorites?
Does anyone own the Mercenaries soundtrack, which I have thought about ordering; or does anyone know where I can find the Call of Duty: Finest Hour soundtrack?

The only good game music is 8-bit music.

Ha!  Well, you are right in a sense.  I think everyone born between 1978 and 1988 has the Mario theme imbedded in their DNA.  And I certainly wouldn't mind hearing the music from the NES "Batman" game again.  I seem to remember it being very good.
Sorry, I guess I should have clarified.  I meant orchestral game music.

"The only good game music is 8-bit music"

I love 8-bit games but seriously, the golden age of game music was the 16-bit era. THUDERFORCE 3, FIRESHARK, SONIC, GUNSTAR HEROES, INSECTORX, AXELAY, ACTRAISER...I could go on.

There were many good 8 bit Shooter scores though, ZANAC is crazy rock and LIFEFORCE is very good too. I'll never forget MEGAMAN 2.

I don't specifically collect game scores because most of the music I like is from the 8 bit and 16 bit era... and most of those games outside of the Square ones don't have sound tracks.

However I love game covers. My favorites are the Smash Bros. Live Orchestra album and Last Level by Brian Davis.

I buy and play some of it, but I don't collect it per se.  There are a few hard-to-get gems that I've found and purchased, like the Eternal Darkness soundtrack that Nintendo was going to release with Nintendo Power subscriptions as part of a promotion.  They were printed but never actually released, and as a result, every now and then a pristine copy shows up on eBay.

Dood, pick up the Actraiser Symphonic Suite.  It's amazing.

It is good. I was playing it the other night. If you have an NES you should pick it up; the game itself is good, too.

Battlefield Vietnam Soundtrack. Okay it's a soundtrack and not original composed music. And I ripped it off the vietnam cd, i'm not paying $20 for songs I already have. The important thing its that it introduced me to one of my favorite bands: Jefferson Airplane.

I own the Japanese CD version of the Kingdom Hearts II soundtrack.
