What's so great about Timesplitters?

I just started reviewing Time Splitters 2 for the Gamecube, and it's my first exposure to the franchise.  I've only played through the first level so far, but all the time, I was thinking, what's supposed to be so special about this?

It's clearly a well constructed game but don't quite see the appeal.  Was it the only decent FPS for the GameCube for a long time?  Is that why it was so popular??

I've never understood the appeal myself.  It's a decent game, but it seems to be a fairly generic FPS.  People view it as the spiritual succesor to Goldeneye, but it's nowhere near as good, in my opinion.

The one player game is cool (the boards get more creative), the co-op is better, but what tears the game are the imaginative arcade and challenge leagues. Multi-player kicks butt too. Future Perfect (Timesplitters 3) is even more creative and funny.

Give it a shot, it's great.

Well the first 2 timesplitters have pretty bad single player modes.    Play the multiplayer with 3 friends and your opinion on the game will change quickly.   Its like Goldeneye on acid.

But if you want a fun Timesplitters single player game get Timesplitters Future perfect.  They vastly improved the levels and gave it a hillarious story.  There's a level where your on a train, and you have to shoot down the same train in an alternate time diminsion.   It gets completely insane.  And the single player mode is co-op!

It seems for Time Splitters 2 they just put the single player in as an after thought.   And try to get the Xbox version.

Yea...I agree with everyone else here.  Split-screen multiplayer is where its at.  You have to play the single player stuff to unlock new characters and other things, but its actually worth it.

The weapons are pretty sweet...I remember loving the music and the controls work well enough.

For a fun time play with four people and make sure on of them is the Monkey...trying to kill them is so hard but fun!

I played the game some more today, and I can see what's so great about it: the variety.  All sorts of stages, imaginative weapons, tons of fun playing modes.  I will definitely test  out the split screen mode next time I have people over.

I've played Timesplitters 1 multiplayer but Timesplitters 2 single-player and multiplayer. I own them both and they are my favorite FPS games on the PS2. I want Future Perfect though.

Get Timesplitters Future Perfect as soon as you can. The one player mode is actually a highlight in that one. I love the humor in it.

Yeah, until Future Perfect came along, Timesplitters' "story" modes were pretty much the low point of the game. Campaigns, challenges and multiplayer is where the real meat of the game is found.
