Frankly I don't see the point in ANY new format beyond DVD's if you need a $1000 television set to even perceive the difference.

[QUOTE=Astrosmasher]As for Blockbuster they are dinosaurs who just have not worked out they are dead yet.  They will.

Are you sure about that?  Remember, Blockbuster is owned by Viacom, a huge company, and they can just keep putting money into the venture if they want to.

In addition, with the Blockbuster Online thing, they allow people to rent online and even go to the store and get new stuff if they don't want to wait.  Whether they can take down NetFlix with such a system remains to be seen, but you have to admit that they've got their finger on our ADD, "I need everything now" culture, and that will undoubtedly help them.

They might say in the business as online renter but there days on the high street are limited.  DVD?VHS renters have been going out of business a lot recently in the UK.
Remember Atari was owned by warner brothers and that did not stop them going out of business and what of the mighty akklaim?  They are no longer with us and I loved Alien Trilogy.  They once were the darlings of the industry and now they are no longer.

So far the penetration of high definition DVD is something like .3%.  That's right - not even 1% yet.  So it's still very early.  There's not a strong demand right now.  I personally own a 50" HDTV and a PS3, yet I haven't even tried Blu Ray.   DVDs still look great to me.

Still, it seems like Sony is building some steam.  The PS3 rollout hasn't been a success, but Blockbuster is starting to carry Blu Ray, which gives them an edge.

Some experts say it will be a stale-mate, with the dual-format players winning out.

I think that is really quite funny if that is the case.

That's what I'm thinking.  Samsung just released a dual-format player to my distributor that I haven't taken a peek at yet.
