Sony promises 380 new games

Sony President Kazuo Hirai claimed that Sony will have 380 games available by the end of their fiscal year (March 08).  This is going to consist of 200 retail titles and 180 online games.

I have no idea if they can accomplish this, but its pretty impressive nonetheless.

I imagine it'll be something like this.  There will be 180 "games" online.

Probably not. Anyway you know how people like that Gears of Wars "Hardcore" moron saying the Wii has no real titles well honestly, how many or these 200 retail games and 180 online games will actually be worth getting. The PS2 and PS1 for all its great titles sure have a bucket load of trash titles.

I have no idea how good or bad these games are gonna be, but if you throw enough crap against the wall eventually some good stuff is gonna stick.

That has been the success of every gaming platform ever.  Think of every system that won a consoles war...it usually has a TON of crappy games to go along with the good games.  The NES, SNES, PS1, DS and PS2 all have way more trash than treasure.  Besides if a few good games come out of this slew of titles then whats the problem?

That was Atari...a company that has been a pile of crap since its glory days in the 70s-80s.

Give Sony a shred of credit here...they have always had great 1st party stuff and they will be getting practically 95% of the games that are on the 360 as well.

I think Atari gets too little credit.  I don't think there was a "crap" Atari.  Sure there was an Atari company that was cheap and that recieved little support from developers, but I don't think there is an Atari system out that I really think is overall crap.  The best argument for a bad Atari is the Jag, but like it or not Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and Aliens Vs. Predator were games that would only have been possible on computers at the time.  Let's see, a system with great FPS games that were otherwise only playable on the PC... I've seen that somewhere lately.  I've read interviews where Atari was criticised for having their hit games be "just PC ports".  That wasn't crap, it was just too early.  They'd have been hailed for it today.

People also seem to think the current Atari is crap.  That's a crazy idea.  They went to a classic gaming event with Atariage and gave away Flashback 2s, they gave permission for Adventure 2 to use the name, they included homebrews on their Flashback 2, they put some of their games up to be played for free online (including some vector ones) they released 2600 hardware, and have made some good (and some bad) compilations.  I don't know what else they can be expected to do with the properties to make people happy.  They certainly aren't crap.

It just seems Sony is using the bucket load of games to come out to show that they have the system to get because hordes or recycleware, garbageware, budgetware  games are coming within a small crop of solid games.

I just want to dispell any myth that EVERY system has a ton of "CRAP" games for every good one. Not all, at all!

COLECOVISION is the best example. They had a high quality library and I own 95% of the commercialy released games. I would guess ony about 12% are "BAD GAMES", meaning not great but playable and of that 12% ,6 games or so are CRAP. 6 games out of a library way over 100 titles! (SLURPY and IT'S ONLY ROCK AND ROLL come to mind; Xonox was the worst CV offender by far! Games like Nova Blast and Illusions are "C" games, playable but not great.)

This carries over to other systems like Intellivision (I can only think of 4 really awful ones, MISSION X, Tron maze a Tron and Donkey Kong / Carnival) and the Atari 5200 and 7800. The 5200 especially had a "Quality over quantity" library!

You just sort of described the videogame industry as a whole.  Every month their might be a couple of good games and the rest are mediocre to garbage...thats just how the industry is today.

Trust me Sony isn't the only company dying to release as many games as possible.
