I think Atari gets too little credit. I don't think there was a "crap" Atari. Sure there was an Atari company that was cheap and that recieved little support from developers, but I don't think there is an Atari system out that I really think is overall crap. The best argument for a bad Atari is the Jag, but like it or not Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and Aliens Vs. Predator were games that would only have been possible on computers at the time. Let's see, a system with great FPS games that were otherwise only playable on the PC... I've seen that somewhere lately. I've read interviews where Atari was criticised for having their hit games be "just PC ports". That wasn't crap, it was just too early. They'd have been hailed for it today.People also seem to think the current Atari is crap. That's a crazy idea. They went to a classic gaming event with Atariage and gave away Flashback 2s, they gave permission for Adventure 2 to use the name, they included homebrews on their Flashback 2, they put some of their games up to be played for free online (including some vector ones) they released 2600 hardware, and have made some good (and some bad) compilations. I don't know what else they can be expected to do with the properties to make people happy. They certainly aren't crap.

If you want to talk about what Atari does for the homebrew community and for fans of its older systems thats fine...as a current publishers of games they are pretty bad. Whenever I see the Atari logo on a game packaging I know that I shouldn't buy the game because its probably terrible.
The last Atari game I purchased and enjoyed was Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee. It was a good game, but since then I haven't had any luck with there products.
