I think the Dreamcast, Saturn, Xbox, PSX, Atari 2600 is overrated. I'm mad at the PS2 because of how easily it breaks. But the lamest system I ever owned would be Sega CD. It's probably not nearly the worst system in existence, I just ran into a slew of bad...err I mean TERRIBLE games in a row when I first bought it. Now that I think of it, the Master system sucked too.

I love the Atari 7800, but I could see people getting that impression with that system too, because the best games for it are the hardest to find.

Time to tip my hand.

The two I dislike the most are the 5200 and the N64, and both for the same reason: the controllers are horrible!  I don't even know how to hold the N64, that stupid thing!

I had expected everyone would focus on the hardware, but you folks are taking a wider view than that, which is interesting.  But I think the controller design is one of the most important facets of a game system, because that's how the player interacts with the software.  I really like the GameCube controller, though I mix up the two grey kidney-bean-shaped buttons all the time (X and Y?).  I very much like the xBox controller-S, and the PSOne/PS2 controller is also very good (except for the alleged analog buttons which you can't tell are analog and no one uses as such) with the updated trigger/accelerator-like R2/L2 buttons on the PS3 making for an excellent revision--once they get rumble back in there.

Again, very interesting to see the varied criteria you all are using to pick out which machines you dislike most.

I only feel it's fair to talk about ones I have.  My personal last favorites are the PS1 and N64 (which I'm sure surprises no one).  I hate the games, and that's all I can judge a system on.

Sorry I keep jumping in, but...

Someone was griping on how awful the NES games have aged. No disagreement, but we should judge these systems on how good they WERE when they came out, not now! The NES had no equal... other systems FORCED you to restart from the start, at LEAST the NES has passwords(and later batteries!). Channel F was excellent for 1976...it..um..just stunk in 1977 when the 2600 came out!

On the 5200...you must excuse Atari their mistake on the controls for their experiance was the multi-control 2600 and the idea was to make a combination joystick/paddle (never mind ASTROCADE already made a superior one..) to play both BREAKOUT and PAC-MAN. Some games play well with practice like Soccer and Kangaroo. Oh, and I've had my 5200 for 17 years-controls still work fine!

I agree--I can only really judge systems I've had experience with.

You're also right.  This is why I've singled out the 5200 even though the controllers were so similar to the ones found on the Intellivision and the Colecovision.  I just never had either of those.

And controllers are so important that they can fundamentally change the whole playing experience.  It's what sets the Wii apart from the PS3 and 360.

I forgot to say that the other reason I disliked the PS1 so much is the controller.  I have never seen the logic, not gotten used to, the symbol-labeled action buttons.  It just seems so counter intuitive to me.  At least when buttons are labeled 1 and 2 or A and B it is easier to know where one button is in relation to the other.  The random labelin g of the PS1 controller just pissed me off constantly.

Oh, and I still vote that the Gamecube controller is possibly the BEST ever made.  The button layout is absolutely the easiest one to remember and to use without having to look down, which is the polar opposite of the Plastation controllers.  It still baffles me that anyone who has given them a fair chance could dislike the Gamecube controllers.  Maybe the C stick is a little weird, but the button design and layout is second to none.

No, we should rate them on how fun they are now.  I still have tons of fun with the 2600, I play my Genesis all the time, and I even whip out the old Jaguar every once in a while.  Most of those systems/games have aged quite gracefully (although the Jag was never that good to begin with).  The NES has not.  It's a chore to play, and an HUGE pain in the butt to clean/maintain.  I mainly have it for nostalgia.
Try playing the original Dragon Warrior or Final Fantasy after you've played the 16 bit ones.  Try playing any of the arcade ports after you've played the arcade perfect versions on modern compilation discs.  Try playing an expansive adventure/platforming game without saving after you've had battery backup.  I think that the NES gave birth to a lot of great genres; however, it was only the beginning and most of the games have aged terribly.
Gotta disagree with ya there.  I still prefer the NES versions of many games, including the Zelda games, the Mario games, and even Metroid.  Besides that, I also still prefer some of the NES arcade "ports" to what was available in the arcade itself.  Not all of them of course, but definitely Rygar and Gauntlet were more fun for me on the NES than in the arcade.

I disagree on every negative thing said about the NES. The console is a piece of crap, but if you get a toploader (around $30 on ebay) you'll never have to clean a game more than once. I still have a blast with all 40 (give or take) of my NES games; they've held up great.

How can someone bash the NES for simply being an 8-bit system?
