I'm not bashing it for its processor speed; I'm bashing it because its games have aged terribly and it's fragile as all hell. I always play for about 5 minutes, then shut it off for three months. The last game I spent any amount of time on was Kirby's Adventure last summer.

No, it wasn't. While I admit the system has almost zero fun games to play today (possibly excepting ALIEN INVASION and WHIZBALL), you have to put it in evolutionary perspective. It bridged the gap between "move the black and white square" PONG systems and the Atari 2600. It made the first attempt to make REAL OBJECTS on the Tv screen; as blocky as they were, you could still tell they were tanks, ships,planes and it was in COLOR too! Also, the low resolution, hard wiring and 2K memory inspired ATARI to make the 2600 more flexible, raise the Rez and put 4K onboard. Thanks,F!

I am sorry Alien... nothing you said convinces me in the slightest. I don't need to judge it for its historical value specifically, but even if I did, it was a failure in history for a reason. Believe me, I was someone who gave that system a lot of chances. I owned it and practically every cart made for it, but in the end it just wasn't much fun to play.
It serves as a nice historical footnote, and little else. Hell -- I've had a lot more fun playing the original Odyssey.
I realize you like to defend EVERY CLASSIC SYSTEM EVER MADE, but not all of us feel obligated to like something just because it gets some medal for historical firsts. A good example would be my first choice in handhelds -- the game.com. It was the first handheld that used a touchscreen, and the first handheld to go online. Yet I can't help but think "So what!!!" when I look back at it. It was little fun at all, and that's what really matters.

Mozart...damn, I can trick everyone on here but you! You are quite correct, I'm a Paleontology/history buff in general and therefore a staunch defender for saying how great things WERE.
The Channel F is indeed the second suckiest system ever (after RCA).. the 2600, Astrocade and APF all came out within a year of the channel F and were VASTLY superior. They (Emerson) could have done better.
On the NES I agree it has not aged well. I do not even OWN one because I've tested 20 and not found one that works (still looking for a top-loader or nes-lookalike); it's odd that 1978 Atari 2600 games work better than 1985 NES ones! I still think many of the NES games themselves are still fun though. I play "NES" Donkey Kong on my GBA every night!

For me it's a toss between the Odyssey 2 and the Virtual Boy. Any system that makes you physically ill playing it deserves to be at the top of the worst list. The O2 on the other hand just gives me the shivers thinking what a huge contraption and waste of time it takes to set it up to play to only get 2 minutes of enjoyment out of before going, "this sucks".

I gave up on my old NES too. It was 5 minutes of extreme frustration to get a game to work, (with wedges and shims and tie down straps!) a feeling of relief and disbelieif when Mario danced across the screen, and then not wanting to turn it off because tommorrow is promised to no NES system! But! -
You can get generic Nintendo's with 2 generic but decent controllers for 30 bucks. Most are compatible with the original controllers, some have issues with a small percentage of the games, but in general that is a small issue. The one I picked up is a YoHO or Yobo or Yoo-Hoo or something, and it weighs about as much as a feather, and is ugly, tiny, and feel cheap, but I have had it over a year and it works perfectly. You still have to jimmy the games a little which is irritating, but overall I am happy with it.
Or for $5 a pop, throw 'em on you Wii!
And that ain't the worst deal, I noticed at used game stores when the 8 bit revial started, the prices of the good NES games really jumped. All of the garbage is on the wall for $2 - $5 dollars, but your good games are locked in the glass case for anywhere from$10 - $30. EBAY reflects this as well, no one is giving their NES games away! Good grief, 10 years ago a guy should have really picked some more stuff up. Oh, well, there is always garage sales and 'junk' stores.
Or there is Animal Crossing, if you want to get a handful of good games by paying $20 for a loaded, cheap GC memory card. Probably not your best option, unless you already have AC!
GBA is an option, but they are more fun on the big screen!

I think it's obvious by now that one man's (or woman's - gotta be PC these days) trash is anothers treasure... I just ordered an Odyssey2 and the O2 multicart(via a freind), it'll come to around $80, and I could get 4 discounted PS2 or xbox games for that!
The O2 is primitive and has low-res graphics,yes, but the games for the system are absolutely unique. The bad ones REALLY suck, but no worse than the worst 2600 games, and you can't get the GREATS (the KC games, Killer bees, Turtles, UFO and more) on any other system!
With a few exceptions almost any system has it's lovers and haters (I don't see many CD-I or Game.com lovers!); the console world would be boring without the "uderdogs", though!

You people mean to tell me that if you had every single for an old Atari system (doesn't really matter which one) and every single game for the NES... that most of you would end up spending more time playing the Atari than the NES?
Somehow I find that EXTREMELY difficult to believe.

My NES gets regular use, but my Ataris sit in their boxes. Friggin' skip-happy paddles!
Still, when I do turn it on, I usually lose about two hours or more of my life. Laser Blast and Missile Command are fantastic fun!
And my sister and I used to while away the summer months on our O2. Granted, it was largely because we didn't have any alternative and we were, like, eight or something, but nevertheless--there's fun to be had there. Especially with the Voice. (Killer Bees is cool with the Voice)
Incidentally: NES's can be made to be reliable. A new pinset and a disabled lockout chip make mine perfectly useable. I'd still like to have a top-loader (I remember laughing at them when they came out, sitting on the Toys R Us shelf in their Super-Nintendo-wannabe boxes trying to bask in the glow of the fancy new system--and I'm thinking, "Who'd buy that stupid, outmoded thing?" Yeah, fifteen years later, my attitude sure has changed!), but I wouldn't want to settle for a NOAC Yobo with its washed-out colors and questionable quality.
