The intellivision was a pretty duff system when I was a kid.  Dull graphics and not many games at least not many compared to the VCS.  Then I got to playit and found it surprisingly fun.  The controllers were dire and they were probably the reason the system never took off.
The colceovision had loads of good games but although its controllers were better than Intellivision they were not great.
I really cannot think of one console that did not have something good on it for its time.  Save for the Konix super console which became the basis for the Jaguar.  The reason I have it in for that console is that it never came out.
IN UK there was the Commodore CD 32.  One of the first consoles to have cd roms but it just looked like an amiga in a different box and did not get much software.  Also there was the Amstrad 3x300, it looked quite good but only ever had about 3 games.....
I like the original x box controllers
You people mean to tell me that if you had every single for an old Atari system (doesn't really matter which one) and every single game for the NES... that most of you would end up spending more time playing the Atari than the NES?

Somehow I find that EXTREMELY difficult to believe.
Well get to believein'

I'd have thought it hard to believe, say, five years ago (although I disliked the NES then, I thought the Atari systems were unplayable), but then a couple things changed and now I can't see having time or the desire to play much that came out after 1984 (the XEGS and 7800 get by on a technicality there); even my beloved Genesis is starting to be too much for me, and may slowly desend into retirement .  I'll take Asteroids over Super Mario Bros. anyday now.

I have to agree with Luke. If I go to the trouble to hook up the old Atari it ain't for very long. Also, as bad as NES hardware is, those old Atari paddles didn't hold up either. It gets to the point where I try to snap them to get them to work, but they are pretty sturdy! But then again, this stuff is 20 + years old!
My NES gets regular use, but my Ataris sit in their boxes.  Friggin' skip-happy paddles!
There's an easy fix for that.

For me it's a toss between the Odyssey 2 and the Virtual Boy.  Any system that makes you physically ill playing it deserves to be at the top of the worst list.  The O2 on the other hand just gives me the shivers thinking what a huge contraption and waste of time it takes to set it up to play to only get 2 minutes of enjoyment out of before going, "this sucks".
Now hold on, every system only needs a handful of games to be worth it right? Well Mr. Roboto on the odyssey 2 is as good as any 2d game not to mention how fun smithereens and killer bees are on this system. I'll play it safe and go with rca studio 2 because it offered nothing and did nothing to further evolution of video games either. Every other system at least offered some good stuff from the uniqueness of the virtual boy, to the fairchild pioneering color graphics and cartridges.

Well, I've had a toploader NES since it came out, and I've never encountered any trouble with it. My original PS2 broke, but I don't consider it the worst system ever because of it; I just went out and bought a slim PS2 (which is also starting to break) so I could play the huge library of PS2 games. I think if you guys got a toploader NES the system would be in your top five instead of your bottom five.

Hey, CHRISTINE....er, Bigoldcar!...
First thanks for the O2heads up.

now, to quote you "Damn skip-happy paddles!"

Ok, Shhhh..! I'm gonna tell ya a little secret. I went Super Breakout crazy last month and HAD to hook up my 2600. I had two sets of paddles and sure enough they both "shook" the on scren bar like crazy when first plugged in, but one was a bit less shaky and I was determined to play! Imagine my surprise when, after 3 games, the paddle was ROCK STEADY on the screen! The thing is, even more than sticks, paddles are prone to corrosive builup. But usually, simply USING them ,twisting back n' forth over and over, will clean that up! Amazing! Now, for paddles that have been sitting in the attic since 1979, you may have to open and clean them...but really, most "shakes" can be cured by just USING the things! I think they were just lonely from disuse

Anybody having trouble with their NES system needs to get on Ebay or something and pick up an FC Twin.  It is a top loader that looks a lot like the second gen SNES, but it plays both NES and SNES games, comes with decent controllers, is compatible with original SNES controllers, has left/right audio (still mono, of course) and video composite output, and has worked perfectly with any game I have tried.  It actually emulates Ninja Gaiden more accurately than the VC on the Wii, which has a few small flaws.  Plus it can be had for 30-40 bucks.

If you're going to go that route, you might as well just buy the emulated versions.
