Good FPS's for people who suck at them?

Postby snakeboy1 » June 27th, 2007, 11:12 pm

I haven't played many first person shooters so I'm not exactly an expert at them. In fact the only ones I have spent any time on are Goldeneye, Duke Nukem: Total Meltdown, and Metroid Prime. It's hardly my favorite genre, but I did enjoy the ones I've listed so I picked up Timesplitters 2 a while back since I don't have many FPS's in my game collection. After reading some of the VGC's comments on the game, I decided to try it out recently.

Now, as I previously stated, I'm no whiz when it comes to FPS's, but it seems to me that Timesplitters 2 is way too difficult on normal difficulty. That was fine considering that they included an easy setting. So I played it on easy, but I found it to be way too easy even for me. There aren't many enemies, and the length of the level is cut in half. So then I tried it on normal again and fared better but still found it too tough. There are wayyyy too few checkpoints and energy power-ups. I finally got to the end boss on level 1 but died immediately and had to go all the way back to the middle of the level. Man, that pisses me off! What's really frustrating is the fact that if they would have made the levels on easy the same length as normal but only easier, I could probably really enjoy the game.

So my question is: Are there any good first-person shooters out there that can be enjoyed by someone who isn't that particularly good at them.

Timesplitters Future Perfect's normal mode is easier than TS2's, while Easy mode isn't as pathetically easy (and has the entire level as well). Plus, the plot is both existant AND amusing. Go for it.

One recent game to fit that description is Prey.  If you die, you simply go through a resurrection process and come back near where you died.  It makes for a breezier experience than most games in the genre, since you don't save and repeat a difficult part over and over.  The game's pretty good, too.  I thought many of the puzzles were good, and the visual effects were amazing.

Unreal Tournament.   Im talking about the PC version I never played the console version, but I heard it got good ports to the PS2 and dreamcast.  But the PC version is by far the best.

Basically the game is meant to be an online deathmatch.  But the game also has a fantastic single player mode against bots.  The bots have 7 skill levels, from incredibly easy to incredibly hard.   But no matter what level the bots are on, they never feel cheap and always feel like humans are controlling them.  I cant think of a better FPS for an amateur to play, as Unreal Tournament will help make anyone better at FPSs, and there seems to be a difficulty level for everyone.

Red faction is a solid game and not overly difficult until the end where they have one hit kill weapons. The difficulty is quite fair however. Can't find the key, blow a hole in the wall!

I admitedly suck at first-person shooters, but I highly enjoyed Goldeneye on the N64 and Medal Of Honor: Frontline on the PS2.

Did you play medal of honor rising sun on the ps2? I found I always ran out of bullets even if I conserved ammo and ended skillfully I might add killing nearly two dozen guards by clubbing them with my rifle in one level while I searched for ammo.

If you've got an xbox grab Halo.  Normal isn't bad at all, Hardcore gives you a decent challenge and Legendary, well, that's gonna be rough.  Halo 2 ramps up the difficulty quite a bit but it's fun non the less.

The best part the checkpoints are everywhere so there's little backtracking/respawning.  Oh, and you can plug in separate controller for the co-op and just leave the guy sitting there (Halo 1 only).  That's the easiest way to knock out Legendary as when you die you'll respawn right next to your teammate (safely out of the way).  Bungie nixed the goof in Halo 2.

Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions. I think I'll definitely pick up Timesplitters Future Perfect, and there are several others mentioned that look interesting. Unfortunately, ActRaiser, I don't have an Xbox as of yet, although I have thought about getting one. I am mainly looking for games for the PS2 and Gamecube. They're probably not the best systems for FPS's, but like I said, there have been several games mentioned for those systems that look pretty good to me.
