Has the VGC gone soft?

Postby VideoGameCritic » June 28th, 2007, 5:54 pm

The site is well known for bucking the trends and "telling it like it is", but have I grown soft in my old age??  More people have been critical of me "going easy" on games lately.  I can't tell from this end, so you tell me.

No, I don't think you've gone soft. I think what is going on here is that more and more gamers are looking at all the wrong stuff in a game, versus the most important aspect: fun. So when you find a game to be, well, fun, and rate it accordingly, folks get mad at you for not noticing various small technical issues.

Remember: You gave a game that I play a TON, MLB 2k7, a very mediocre score, when most review outlets (and myself) graded it much higher than that.

critic, you still make the drill sergeant from the movie 'full metal jacket' seem like a mama's boy.  and though your midsection is slightly marshmellowy, you still know when to slam a game.  but if you cry the next time you hear a song by 'the carpenters', then seek counseling.  in fact, if you listen to the carpenters at all, seek counseling.

No, like feilong80 said, you review games mainly based on fun factor, rather than on graphics. I enjoy reading your reviews because you understand that enjoyment is the most important aspect of a game. It's a nice break to read them after reading the reviews in Game Informer, which I've been noticing more and more lately grades far too much based off graphics.

Good call on Game Informer, a. I just started to get a few issues in the mail again after reupping my EbGames discount card. The quality of the writing has definitely gone down, in my opinion. Not that it was all that great to begin with.

Honestly, I've about had it with the generalist gaming magazines. If I'm going to get a magazine, I might as well just get the "official" magazine for each platform: the reviews might have a bias, but at least I'd get better insider information on release dates and previews.

You haven't gone soft; you just aren't as harsh as some of the more mainstream reviewers *coughgamespotcough*, and like previously mentioned you look for the good in the game, whereas most other reviewers just look for the bad.

And besides, you do this for a hobby; you only really play through games you like, right?  If a game gets an F in my book, I'm not playing it.  I have enough crap to wade through in the real world; I'm not doing it again in my relaxation time.

What is this "old age" you talk about Dave?  I'm 34 and the pics I've seen of you on your website appear to make you... I don't know...21??!!   God, if we're considered old then what does that make Alienblue?

21!? Last I heard Dave was among our Senile, one year younger than me, or 40.

I could be wrong..losing my memory...

As for the question, I think....what was it again? Oh, yes, I deffinitely agree Dave should review more 1980's games. Thems the ticket by cracky! Ayy-yup!

(okay Dave is about the fairest reviewer I've known, which makes sense, he does it for LOVE not money. In fact theres only one reviewer in the world better than VGC....ME! )

The worst thing you could do is think you have to live up to a supposed standard of 'harshnes' in a review! You'll turn into IGN or Gamespot, for pete's sake!

So keep focusing on fun to play, it sets you apart.

Also I am glad you have a letter grade standard instead of a numerical one. None of the other chumps ever want to give a game a 'perfect' 10, so you end up with this 9.8 crap, how in the hell do you decide to knock off 2/10ths of a point on a game?   It is just ridiculues and self indulgent, go judge figure skating you hacks! Meanwhile you can give an outstanding game an "A", and if it is really impressive, it gets an "A+". It just makes more sense, and comes off as so less petty.

I know these posts can sound like a bunch of kiss ups, (which is truly pathetic!), but people come to this site for a reason.
