Mariokart?
Someone help me out here. I can't get into MarioKart! I mean, of course I know how to PLAY but this game is loved by millions, right? I originally played the SNES version and really didn't like it, but then I wasn't much into racers at all then. Since my freind gave me a PS2, Toca3/DT racer and Gran Turismo 4 with a STEERING WHEEL, I LOVE real racing games (well, Toca3 is perfect, DT racer is good, GT4 is not really my cup o tea, but still..) So I thought I'd love the GBA Mariokart. I love racing, I love Mario, I should love this, but I'm not getting it. I tried with Peach, Luigi and Mario and keep coming in last! The controls are hard to use, the 3-D graphics only fair... am I missing something here or do I maybe just not like KART racers? I'm hesitant to blow $35 on the DS MK now... I'm glad I got to try this for free but I know, the GBA=Snes, DS=N64 (sorta), maybe thats it? I want to review this game fairly. Any tips to help me play better?

You will find people who tell you N64 MK in the highlight of the series. That is false. It is pretty rough. The best part of the game is the charachter selection screen, that shot looks wonderful. I can't play the SNES version because the mode 7 graphics give me a headache. I believe the GBA version is pretty similiar, I havn'e played it because I have avoided it.
The best in the series is the GC version, Double Dash. It is WAY smoother and controllers much better than the N64 version. Very polished, awesome courses and great music. It is the complete package. If you don't like this game, you just don't like MK.
DS version is the 2nd best, it is pretty similar to the GC version without analog control, which doesn't bother the game, but it is not quite as tight as the GC version. They also implemented a draft boost in this game, which is pretty cool. Also has some great original tracks and a smattering of tracks from the earlier games. Ironically, I thought the tracks from the GBA were the best from the classics, but then, they have been redone from 3-d and the game itself is of course true 3-d. THe N64 tracks are by far the most boring. So you get 32 tracks which ain't bad at all.
So Alien, if you want to take a chance on the DS version I say go for it, it is fundamentaly different from mode 7 mario kart. If you have a GC though, Double Dash is a much, much better buy. We can only hope Nintendo will some day top it.

Yeah, same engine. In fact, all 20 courses from the SNES game are included in the GBA version in addition to the 20 new ones, and they all play almost the same as before. So yeah, you might continue to stay away.

Mariokart?
Not really...
Super Circuit has a all new engine, with bonus courses that are roughly similar to the SuperNes originals in layout and theme only. Graphics are changed and they lack ALL obstacles from the Super Nes game, including pipes, oil slicks, Thwomps, boosts, flopping fish, Monty Moles, and Piranha plants.
Its nice to have some extra tracks, but it doesn't really seem like the SNES game since everything except the track names and layout have been changed on the extra tracks from the original game. And if you didn't like how the SNES game handled and the Mode 7 style graphics, you'll likely not like the GBA game because it has many similarities in how the karts handle and how the graphics are presented.
In my opinion, the best game in the series is the SuperNes original, followed by Mario Kart 64 and then Super Circuit. I'm not sure how I'd place Double Dash and Mario Kart DS, I was left unimpressed with both but I've yet to play DD in multiplayer mode where I suspect it really shines (The series has always been at its best in multiplayer, its rather a boring series to play alone). Most people prefer the first two games in the series, though the DS one was quite popular for a while at least (Was a nice effort but it could've been better in so many ways, I think I've listed my complaints here in the past if anyone is curious why I was left unsatisfied with it).
