PS3 System Updates Suck

Postby VideoGameCritic » July 1st, 2007, 8:39 pm

Whenever I put in a new PS3 game, it prompts me to do a frickin' system update.  What in the hell needs to be updated?  And it's not even a simple process.  You have to copy the patch to your hard drive, hook up your control via a special cable, page through some legal text, and then wait 10 minutes for the update to run.  It's as bad as installing a PC game!

It's bad enough the system doesn't have any good games, but having to go through this hassle brings down my opinion of the system even more.

I was reading the latest PSM magazine, and even that game "Lair" isn't looking very good.  I was really hoping that would give the system a much-needed boost.

Also, Sony's new "Home" thing sounds like a glorified version of Nintendo's Mii system.  Sony's going all out so you can create your own apartment and furnish it with virtual furniture.  Do they really expect people to spend real money for a God of War coffee table?  Give me a break.

I know! That's why I've been looking into buying a Xbox 360 Elite.

Sony is really blowing it this time around.

One of the reasons I don't have much interest in the PS3 is system updates. Its nice to buy a game then play it right away, not be forced to update the game. It'll be like PC games being shipped out broken. On an interesting note what happens when PS3 support is over, will we be able to play games on it  at all if the system's firmware is reset?

Wait a minute, Lair doesn't look very good? Source, please? Is PSM Playstation Mag?

My opinion on Lair has soured a bit also. I think the air battles look great but the land battles look bad. the soldiers all look the same and the way the dragon interacts with them looks stiff. My opinion on Warhawk is not good either now that its only multiplayer.

Actually, the God of War coffee table thing would make money.  Lots of money.  People like to spend money online.
However, I saw one guy (If forget who) talking about it who made a good point.  In home you can virtually walk somewhere and listen to your music, hook up with friends for a game, or chat with buddies.  He said it might seem like a good idea, but if you want to hang out in game there are much better options depending on what part of the experience you enjoy (Animal Crossing: Wild World, Second Life, MMORPGs, MMO Space games, MSN, Xbox Live, Poker Stars, Yahoo Games, etc), and if you just want to listen to music, who wants to walk to it rather than just paging a menu?  Why would you want to virtually walk to a virtual CD player, and then virtually hit play?  That's more work than paging a menu, and for what?  So you can pretend you're somewhere with a stereo?  You are somewhere with a stereo: your house.

Yeah, Playstation magazine.  They said they're worried about it, because a recent demo looked "good but not great".

Yeah, Playstation Home has always looked a little iffy to me. Not sure I'd write it off just yet though, but I think the error they are making is saying, "Oh, yeah, OK, Nintendo is doing well with Miis. Right. So let's do something like that... but waaay BIGGER!!!"

The problem is, the Mii's are popular because of the simplicity. It is hard to NOT make decent looking avatars. Also, the whole Home idea of a virtual apartment is a bit far out there for the expanded audience, IMO. Of course, maybe Sony is just going for the premium user at this point, but as others have articulated, that isn't their strategy.

I remember some time ago saying the PS3 will be the N64 of its generation: Some great, even era defining games, but all in all it won't have the consistency or library the other systems will have. I am looking more and more correct as time marches on.

If they want you to make a virtual apartment, then shouldn't they release a Sims game? It'd be the exact same thing AND it would include a $60 price tag!
I don't entirely agree with the comparison between the N64 and PS3. I believe that the N64 had many more new innovations (analog stick, bulit in four player) than the PS3 (tilit sensor, which is negated due to lack of rumble).

To be sure, it is a rough comparison. Mostly I am referring to units sold. I definitely enjoyed the innovations the N64 had to offer.

Although I don't remember whining about the PS1 constantly back in those days (ah... my highschool days... like the scent of fresh lemon, you see...). In fact, I admired the system's success, and bought one.

I'm an equal opportunity console enjoyer.
