Actually, my Wii had to update when I put in Super Paper Mario. But it took about a minute, and certainly wasn't as much of a hassle as what you described with the PS3.

PS3 System Updates Suck
There were four 360 titles released this week in the Uk. Hour of victory, call of juarez, some beaten up and vampire rain. None of them tempted me but that was four more than on ps3 or wii. The reason I say this and this site atested to this is that we all love playing vid games. That is why we get systems.
Another idea will probably be to sell you things that you can never own. The ipod demographic. 360 have been doing that with their virtual arcade, I have not bought one game from it.
Hopefully it will sort itself out soon.

PS3 System Updates Suck
Whenever I put in a new PS3 game, it prompts me to do a frickin' system update. What in the hell needs to be updated? And it's not even a simple process. You have to copy the patch to your hard drive, hook up your control via a special cable, page through some legal text, and then wait 10 minutes for the update to run. It's as bad as installing a PC game!
It's bad enough the system doesn't have any good games, but having to go through this hassle brings down my opinion of the system even more.
Also the amount of time spent installing these updates varies. I've had some that literally took 1 min and other take 15. It depends on what they are adding.
If these system updates didn't do anything I would be annoyed, but most of the time they make the system better. For example, when I first bought my PS3 you couldn't prevent a game from autoloading. If a disc was in the PS3 it would skip the little navigational screen and head right into the game. People complained about this and Sony fixed it in a system update. Another recent update allowed PS1, PS2 and regular DVDs to upscale into higher resolutions. This was a fantastic update. It makes watching DVDs on the PS3 a must since it makes the picture much better. I also now play all my old PS1 and PS2 games on my PS3.
So while these updates can be annoying (why do they make you plug the controller into the system with the USB cable?) they do serve a purpose...to make the system better as time go on.
When I first bought the Wii there was a quite a few system updates, but if you don't have WiiConnect24 hooked up you wouldn't ever know about them. They took a few minutes to install, but most were alot shorter than PS3 updates (probably due to size of the updates).
These updates suck, but they do add features and enhance the systems, so I don't really see a problem with them.

I remember some time ago saying the PS3 will be the N64 of its generation: Some great, even era defining games, but all in all it won't have the consistency or library the other systems will have. I am looking more and more correct as time marches on.

Hey easy there, the n64 did much better then the PS3, better price and unparalleled multiplayer. I consider the n64 one of the best systems definitely in my top 3. N64 sold much more than the PS3 in equivalent time elapsed. I find the n64 library to be quite balanced, not inconsistent as you claim.

Being one of the only other PS3 owners on this site I feel like I have to make a comment. Your intial post is a TAD bit exagerated. I have owned a PS3 since January and I have installed about 6 updates. These are OPTIONAL...I have yet to play a game that forces you to update before you can play. Right now there is a system update and everytime I play MLB: The Show it asks me to update. I decline and I play my game.

Do I regret buying a PS3? Not one bit. Is it a disappointing console right now? Yes it is.
Thats not to say that I hate the thing and I never play it. It probably gets equal playing time to my 360, while the Wii is the clear favorite in my household right now.
These are the following games that I own, Resistance: Fall of Man, MLB 07: The Show, Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom, The Edler Scrolls IV: Oblivion and NBA Street Homecourt. I'm planning on getting Motorstorm and Ninja Gaiden Sigma at some point too. My favorite game is still Resistance: Fall of Man and online mutliplayer is great at extending the value of the game. The online multiplayer is free and its lag free (awesome!).
Speaking of online I have purchased three games off the Playstation Network, Super Stardust HD, Calling ALL Cars and Mortal Kombat II. My favorite is the crazy shumup Super Stardust HD. For $8 its a steal and one of the best games on the system. Its equal to Geometry Wars in terms of gameplay and fun factor.
I've watched a couple of Blu Ray movies and they look stunning. When they come down in price I will certainly buy more of them. Right now I wait for good deals on Amazon.com. They have great Blu Ray deals once every couple of months.
Right now the future looks good for the rest of 07. I'm expecting some big titles to come out for the PS3 from Sept to Dec. These games look to help even out the thin PS3 library
Lair
Heavenly Sword
Warhawk
The Eye of Judgement
FolkLore
Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction
Haze
Time Crisis 4 w Guncon
Uncharted Drake's Fortune
I'm sure there is some stuff I'm forgetting some others, plus I'm not including 3rd party games that are also appearing on the 360 (Stranglehold and Devil May Cry 4 etc...).
I really think that Heavenly Sword, Folklore, Ratchet and Uncharted will be AAA efforts and will help lure some more people back to Sony's brand.
If I had to tell a person to get one system right now it would be a Wii. Its the best bang for your buck and it simply fun to play. Until there are more games and big price cut I can't recommend the PS3 to people on the fence.
