Well, that's one way to publish a game cheaply

Postby feilong801 » July 4th, 2007, 12:04 am

Remember when we were talking about Wii Ware, and part of the excitement was that Japan is well known for a very good indie game scene? Well, it's happening already- except not on Wii Ware, but in a game called "Blast Works" being published by Majesco (not for Wii Ware- this is a regular release for Wii).

Apparently, this game is based off of a freeware game called "Tumiki Fighters." It was developed by a single Japanese dude named Kenta Cho, and he published the game under a freeware license.

Thing is, Majesco actually contacted Cho about the port, and his response, incredibly, was to just go ahead and do what you want with it! Wow. I'm willing to bet this guy makes decent coin in his day job (he is an IT researcher) to pretty much just hand a major publisher his work, but hey, he's free to do that.

In any event, an interesting game concept: Majesco is marketing it as a "make your own shooter" game where you can share levels with friends. And being Majesco, it'll be cheap.

Here's an interview with Kenta Cho:

It might also be a smart way for him to make his entrance as a developer without having to do as much as you normally would to publicize your skills.

Getting fair compensation for one's labors is hardly "hyper-capitalist," whatever that really means anyway (I suspect that, for many, such a term really just means "capitalist"). I wasn't saying the guy did the wrong thing.

You are perfectly free to give something away in the free market. No rules against that.

IGN.com lists a Fall 2007 release date, so you shouldn't have to wait long.
