PS3 price cut finally hits!

Actraiser -

When I read your little synopsis, I have to admit that you are right, your bad attitude is justified.

I was browsing flash games on Wii the other day, and while most are horrible junk, a few decent ones gave me a glimmer of hope (try Bowman, a nice power and angle artilery simulator) for more accomplished efforts on Wiiware. For people like me, it is the future. I don't enjoy so called 'epic' games like I used to, even Twilight Princess. I want shorter, less empensive, imaginitive games. I want the early days of gaming and the glory of arcades on my Wii, I don't give a rip if they use motion controls or not. Just give me something to get excited about other than 'better' and more 'realistic' graphics. I don't want videogames to reflect life, I want them to be off the wall and different. I ain't no wanna be gansta thug!

$500 is still a lot of money. Thats 550 in canada. The ps2, xbox were 450 cad at launch. Secondly, buying a ps3 for a cheap blu-ray player is not a factor anymore. Blu-ray burners are around $450cad and blu-ray players have dropped considerably to around $600cad. For movie watching, a dedicated player is preferred.  On the videogame side, the ps3 is still lacking in overall appeal for me. Other than f1 championship edition and maybe motorstorm, not interested. More importantly, i cannot afford nor need/want a hd tv.

I think this price cut just might make a difference for sony. With a Blu-ray player, it starting to make more sense buying a PS3. Unless of course, the other consoles make price cuts. Do you think the Wii or 360's going to make a price cut by the end of the year? I'm going to buy a Wii, but I need to save up my money until Winter, so you can tell that less money would equal a god send for me.

A price cut doesn't mean jack if the games aren't there, obviously. Gamecubes didn't start flying off the shelves when the price hit $100, did they? Besides, the 360 is essentially getting the same games the ps3 is getting, minus a few, for so much less the price. Oh, I forgot about the blu-ray! That magic little device that drives the price of movies through the roof all for the sake of a very pretty picture(whoopie!) and more extras(I HATE movies that have aisles of extras....JUST GIVE ME THE FRIGGIN' MOVIE!!!). I buy video game systems for video games. Thanks Sony but if I want a blu ray player, I'll pay the excessive price of $600 to get one! Those are just my thoughts. I doubt the price drop is going to help much.

I agree that mordern gaming has hit a wall, somewhat. I can't afford any of the consoles right now, but if I did (and I MAY save up for it in near future) it would be the Wii. The Wii isn't BETTER, just DIFFERENT and that's what matters!

Pretending I won the lottery, I would still be hesitant to buy the PS3 or X360 right now. The PS3 has no great games I care about and If I want Blu-ray, I'd buy a dedicated player.

The 360 has better games but is suffering a major reliability problem; ..I'd wait several months to be sure the system I bought was perfected.

But I'm happy with my DS/GBA as my main "console" right now. You guys fight bloody battles, I'll play with my blocks!

I'm gonna have to go ahead and disagree with the notion that somehow gaming has hit a wall. What we have here is three console formats that are going to go the distance, as opposed to previous generations where one console hits the skids.

Each console not only has the standard array of published games, but each one already has/will have original content and retro titles available for download.

This is the generation of Wii Sports, Oblivion, Halo 3, Katamary Damacy, Phoenix Wright, Resident Evil 4, God of War, Twilight Princess, Guitar Hero, Planet Puzzle League, Brain Age.... the list goes on and on and on (and I'm not even counting PC gaming at this point). In other words, if there isn't something for your pariticular taste, you are being, my friends, overly pessimistic.

There are always things the big three can do better. But the industry is healthy. I don't think there is any wall.

I agree with feilong. I've never been happier as a gamer. The quality is so good in games now that I have to be uber selective in buying games. Many games I don't buy a year ago I would have gobbled up.

I'd still rather pay $400 for a 360 Premium than $500 for a PS3, but it's a start. Hopefully, Microsoft will drop the price of the 360 soon. I thought they would do that after they released the new model, but I guess not.

I am pessimistic because my attitutde is so different form the mainstream attitude that is obssesed with graphics and violence. I am pessimistic because this is an industry where most games are developed to best fit with the angst and bloddlust of teeneagers. I am pessimistc because the the general feel of  a signifigant portion of today's bestsellers just gets darker and darker.

Read an issue of EGM today, and then read one that is 5 years old, and than read one that is 10 years old. Darker, darker, darker. Today they have almost complete bias in their content toward violent games, and there previews, reviews and editorial content is just a mish mash of fratboy cussing and innuendo. It is pathetic coming from grown men who are posturing, again, for teenagers. Its even sadder if they are sincere.  And EGM and 1up are the leader for cool, and a lot  of the gaming press take their cues from them, they are the 'cutting edge' of VG 'journalism'.

People say how gaming is 'growing up'. put I don't see it. To me it is dumbing down. I would make my i(M)mature gaming crack here, but how many topics can I post that in a year?

But you are also right, Rob, the industry is fragmenting, too. It just is taking longer than I like. The more I play Wii Sports, the more I realize how it is the most underated game of the last year or so. It is brilliant, but the Wii needs a lot more of Wii Sports quality game to be a success. But it is relatively early in the Wii life cycle (I hope!) and E3 is coming, maybe they'll give me something to pine over.

But the majority of games today, be they GTA types, Gothic shooters and action games, almost all licesend games, bigger and 'better' sequels of existing franchises, Madden football, 10 million racing games, 10 million war simulators and bloody FPS, they don't speak to me at all. I hope I don't sound like I am whining, I ain't mad about it, I just don't fit in with it. I'm not even really much of a fan of modern Video Games, just some Nintendo ones. I guess that makes me a fanboy, but I have too high of standards to be altruistic given the current conditions!
