PS3 price cut finally hits!

Well it has been long speculated and pratically begged for by the masses...here is the article confirming Sony's big news:

http://kotaku.com/gaming/truth/retailer-confirms-100-ps3-price-cut-275456.php

The price cut is due to hit streets on July 12th...one day after Sony's conference at E3.  The new price of the 60GB PS3 is going to be $499.  I'm not sure this will entice more people right away, but when they get more games into stores it will help them out.

If I didn't have a PS3 and 360 and I had to choose between an Elite and PS3...I would take the PS3.  The simple fact that it is a blu ray player and it has Wi-Fi instantly makes it the better deal in terms of hardware.

If Sony can have a very positive E3 and show of some promising titles they might actually set themselves up for a decent second half of the year.

First Microsoft delievers big news and now Sony.  I wonder if Nintendo is gonna do something sweet this as well...

I think this just goes to show you how badly overpriced it was to begin with.

Hmm, methinks this shows how much of a mistake Microsoft made with the so called "Elite" model. They should have made a price cut themselves on their hard drive equipped system, dropping it to $350, perhaps $300 if they could shake it, while eliminating the bare bones core model.

Because now you have a situation where, yes, the PS3 is a better deal than the "Elite" due to blu-ray and built in Wi-Fi. Better to not even have the Elite, keep the $400 on the regular 360, IMO.

It'll be interesting to see if this drop has any effect on sales. It should at least have a small bump, I would guess.

As usual, the games will tell the story.

At 500 bucks the 60GB PS3 is an incredible value.   But I expect the 360 to cut down to at least 350 for the 20 GB one now and move the elite down to 400.  If the PS3 could get some good games, it would be worth buying.

And on the same day, Microsoft annoounces an extended warranty for its flawed 360, that's going to cost them a billion bucks. Don't expect a price cut anytime soon.

It won't be immediate, They will eat up that cost over the process of the next 3 years.   and right now Microsoft is actually making money off the sale of the hardware itself. (which is not typical for consoles)   They can afford a price cut, and I'm certain it will come soon.

It's like I've been saying: modern gaming blows. Think about it, the "big" announcements right now are:

1) A horribly, horribly overpriced system (that is overpriced just so the company making it can push a format they'll make a zillion dollars off of) is dropping somewhat in price so it'll be closer to what any idiot would have known was a better starting price anyway.  It's going to finally approach getting near to the price area everyone said it should have been to start with.  Whoopide-doo.

2) A terribly faulty system that should never have been released to the public without more testing can now be returned for 3 years if it dies.  This only took over a year and a half of reports of problems by fans of the system before the company in charage very "graciously" did something any idiot could have told them they needed to do back in 2005.  Wow, extended warrenty on junk!  Sign me up!

Oh yes, the future is now.

My over and under was right on! I should go to Vegas, I guess. (Well, maybe it didn't take a genius.)

Well, PS3 should benefit from this and from MS bad news, which really could not have come at a worse time. So can MS respond with their own price cut, or are their hands already tied by the warranty debacle costs? I say their hands are tied.

Uh, guys, the PS3 wasn't exactly flying off store shelves with the 20 GB model going at $499.  Why on earth would anyone think the 60 GB at $499 is going to make a huge difference?

Games first people that's how you get folks to buy your console. Games first.

(humbly, realizes it's a start but would really prefer seeing Lair get a 9/10)

Well the 20GB version was almost impossible to find.  Plus it didn't have Wi-Fi.  The new price is certainly a more enticing purchase.

Also I agree with you 100% about the games, but I was simply comparing the hardware value.  For $20 more you get a ton of value in the PS3 and you don't have to worry about it breaking.

I really don't see Microsoft making a price cut anytime soon.  They are still outselling the PS3 in the States, which is all they seem to care about...plus they have 3 SKUs in the market right this second.  They figure that if you want to save money you buy a core or premium system.
