Are they really milking it?

I've been reading some complaints on forums and such about the new Mario Kart and how Nintendo needs to stop milking it? Why is it than only Nintendo gets the blame for milking franchises? Mario Kart has has had, what, six installments in fifteen years? What's Sam Fisher up to in five years, five? Ridge Racer has seven installments in eleven years, Tekken is up to five, three Halos in five+ years, etc. Six Mario Karts in fifteen years, two Pikmins in a six year period, seven REAL console Zeldas, five handheld. There have really only been six REAL Mario games, seven with Galaxy, in the past twenty two-years with assorted different ones on the handhelds. So, why is Nintendo the only company that gets blamed for not coming up with mounds of IP's and so forth? Last I checked, MS nor Sony really come up with many compelling IP's of their own. Sega and Nintendo have more recognizable franchises than ANYBODY out there!

Nintendo isn't the only one that gets criticized for this.

Galaxy isn't a real Mario game in my opinion. I think a lot of people would be less excited for this if they took the time to watch videos of it.

That's exactly why I AM so excited about it.  The videos look sweet!  Why is it not a real Mario Game?  I can't think of a single reason to consider that, and I can't see why it would matter.  Super Mario 2 wasn't a "real" Mario game and it was great.

Thank you.  This is one of my biggest pet peeves.  When Nintendo isn't being accused of milking their franchises too much they are being accused of not milking them enough ("Boo Hoo, where's a new Kid Icarus"  "Boo-Hoo, when's the new Metroid going to be out").

Nintendo does a good job of protecting their franchises, I just hope they don't stand in the way of new games as well. Its a tough balancing act. You have to keep your meal tickets going, but you can't stay under the same cow forever! Always need to find new teats to milk!

GC games that blew me away the first time I played them (in order) :

Metroid prime
Mario Kart DD
LOZ WW
PIkmin 2

As far as I know, no series has been milked more than Street Fighter.

People need to be realistic. Nintendo has IP gold, and it would be suicidal from a business standpoint to not take advantage of that IP.

Resident Evil 4 proves that franchise iterations don't have to be repetitive. And one could argue that most of the Nintendo franchises have done a great job in refreshing the gameplay.

One of the posters hit the nail on the head: if they stopped releasing stuff based on their beloved, classic IP, the fanboy whining would sort of equal the sounds of those millions of Alderaanians suddenly crying out in the first Star Wars, minus the "silenced" part (-:

well mario galaxy feels a lot like super mario 64 from the videos which for me gives a mixed reaction. On the plus side, more mario 64 is great. The bad; animations and very similar structure to an eleven year old game is dissapointing.

Speaking about milking franchises, how about pokemon. From making multiple versions of the same game with a few unique monsters in each version to squeeze more money out of parents wallets when all monsters could fit on one cart to the multiple new versions each year with minor tweaks and new monsters but essentially the same game is really milking it.

I think that argument is silly. All games are going to have some elements that are very old, while having elements that are new. Saying that Mario having similar animations to an 11 year old game is like saying Killzone 2 is dissapointing because the basic gameplay style goes all the way back to Wolfenstein 3D.

In any case, it is really hard to know if this game will be good without, you know, playing the thing.

People just like to gripe about Nintendo.

Because its also 'true' that Nintendo is abandoning "hardcore" game today for Brain Age etc.

But before that, when Nintendo was less popular, they were irrelevant because they were kiddie.

No one other company is even close to breaking more new ground with new IP's than Nintendo today, end of story.
