Sony conference impressions

Here are a few reason why I felt Sony did a terrific job with their press conference at E3...

First was the announcement of the 60GB PS3 price cut.  This was supposed to be announced first at the press conference but since it was leaked alot of Sony's thunder was stolen.  Still the its huge news and it shouldn't be taken lightly.  Places like Amazon.com is already selling tons of these things now and I'm sure sales will increase as the year comes to a close.

Next we have the fact that more people were talking about Killzone 2 more than Microsoft's press conference.  Also the general word in the industry is that the game is looking incredible. 

Being a casual MMO player, I was really excited to see NCSoft (guys who made City of Heroes and Guild Wars) team up with Sony.  I'm sure something really exciting will come out of them in the future.  If they make a City of Heroes 2 for the PS3 I would be really excited.

Somebody else already mentioned this, but the fact that Unreal Tournament III is going to be a PS3 exclusive this year is huge...not to mention that they are allowing mods via the Playstation network (something that has never been done before).  The fact that they are working very closely with Epic to get the Unreal Engine working is going to help them big time in the long run.

Speaking of timed-exclusive FPSs, Haze is looking pretty good as well.  The game seems to have a theme akin to that of the old Syndicate games on the PC.  Everybody in the world takes mind-altering drugs (called nectar) to make the world an enjoyable place.  Except once you stop taking the drugs you realize how awful and dreary the world really is...it has an interesting plot and if things go well it could be a sleeper hit.

Another big announcement was that Metal Gear would be staying at home on the PS3.  The in-game trailer for MGS4 is simply the best looking game I've ever seen.  It will sell tons of systems for Sony.  Also the fact that it will be Kojima's last Metal Gear game (possibly the end of the series too) will help whip fanboys into a frenzy.

The showed off more of Home...and while I'm not that interested in it I can see the potential.  Things like facebook.com and myspace.com are friggin huge.  People love to virtually plaster themselves out their and this has the potential to be very popular.

The redesigned PSP is going to help sell more of those as well.  With the PSP, PS2 and PS3 in the market Sony will sell alot of hardware this fiscal year. 

Finally Sony hinted at several games that would be out in 08 which means they have a strong second half lineup and as well as great games for next year as well.   Clearly Sony is expecting to hit its stride at going into the end of its fiscal year (March 08) and that could very well be a turning point for them in this generation.

I wasn't expecting much out of Sony this year, but they sort of surprised me.  They really knocked the wind out of Microsoft's sail and I felt like they kept pace with Nintendo.

The problem I had with Sony's press conference is the fact that they didn't give me any compelling reason to buy a PS3 this year. Especially for someone who already has a 360. PS3's 2 best games Killzone and MGS 4 are both coming out next year. The price cut was nice but they have had that same price on a lower end sku. Why do you think its going to make a big difference. Just because Amazon is selling fast now doesn't mean that its going to hold up after a month. I think haze looks good but looks very generic to me. Unreal Tournament has always been a mostly online title so I'm not really interested. If I want to play multi player online I'll just play Halo 3. The truth is that I can only buy about 12 games and acessories this year. If I had a PS3 none of there games would make my top 12. As it is I actually had to cross off some wii games to make room. The only wii game I have left is Mario Galaxy.

Its true that some of these games are on PS3 but I can't see people buying the PS3 versions until they can improve the graphics somewhat. I played Blue Dragon and Ace Combat demos 2 days ago and I need those games not only are they beautiful but they play great to. Can't wait.
