To Save Sony!

I know it won't happen, but I just thougt of how Sony might save the PS3. Many Vid-game makers, starting way back with Mattel and Intellivision 2, have produced smaller, cheaper versions of their consoles in order to compete. Why oh why can't sony do this?

If they say The PS3 is too expensive to produce, well....keep seling it for 8 zillion bucks but ALSO make a "PS2.5" that is competetive with the 360 and sells for $399! They don't have to BETTER the 360, just be as good and then nab exclusive liscenses to hit games.

I know Atari tried something similiar when the 7800 failed, but THEY shot themselves in the foot by making a LESS competive machine with the XEGS...I'm saying, make a "Sony 360", call it the Super PS or whatever. BEFORE ITS TOO LATE!

I'm not sure that is possible. For all the hype about the PS3's power, the games thus far are either indistuinguishable from the Xbox 360, or in some cases, even slightly worse (due to programming issues). Only Oblivion looks better in any kind of appreciable way.

So, there is no "downgrade" they can make to make their system compete with the 360 (because they are already pretty much evenly matched), unless they sort of went the Wii route.

well they could sort out their UK pricing.

The damned thing sells for the same in Sterling as US Dollars, but Sterling is worth twice as much as the Dollar, so we are paying (or not in this case) twice the price.

this is unacceptable

They could simply throw out the blu-ray, and re-release everything on DVD.  (This, of course, would require some games to be on two or three DVD's.)

This idea sounds eerily familiar.

Probably because I'm such a Sega fan.

To Save Sony!

I think the only way to save Sony now would be for us all to take up a collection and send Sony what it really needs - cold hard cash!

Some poor Sony executive is faced with the prospect of not being able to buy a new 100 foot yacht this year.

Won't you help?

Good one Critic. I apprciate good sarcasm.

But the fact is, the PSX and PS2 sold/IS selling still, quite well. It's like Atari all over, where people kept buying the Atari 2600 Junior but not the 7800 or XEGS.

I think they should have gone the Wii route with games SLIGHTLY better but with "must have" titles and 100% (or close) backwards compatibility. The PS2 outsold the Xbox even though the Xbox had slightly better graphics and a hard drive. I think the blu-ray thing is killing them most. I have both PS2 and Xbox but I use a DEDICATED machine to play DVD movies. Unless someone wants a "second player", I think in a year no one will care that the PS3 can play blu-ray, as prices on players are falling. I chose PSX over Saturn, I'd hate to see the company go bye-bye!

There appear to be in it for the long haul. I think they will just let PS2 carry the company until the PS3 hopefully (for them) starts to snowball. I think this is a 10 year console, unless it had a bad holiday and flatlines quickly after that. It just shows how important Bluray is to Sony. Even then they could give it another year, who knows?

The fact that they are discontinuing the 60GB model and letting it sell out to make way for an 80 GB model suggest they are commited, unless they are trying to get as much money as they can back and then fold it. That would be something too.

Maybe its time for SECA to concentrate only on making 3rd party games, they're just not relevant in the console race anymore.
