Tips to make the Critic more money......

Postby Steerforth » July 16th, 2007, 8:18 am

Went on IGN recently to download some vids of E-3 games, but whoops I can't, I'm not an "insider"! Oh no! So I go to another site and gets all I wants.

See Critic, you obviously are  not trying hard enough! Here is some free, unsolicitated advice form Steerforth.

1. You need more adds. Flood the site. Give each review its own page and make a full page add load before the review comes up.

2. You have to appeal to the youth more, a blog should help this. Be cynical, swear a lot, rail against the industry no matter what, and be too cool for school. Leave a comment section, and bitterly cut people down who try to make counter points. You have the power of moderation, you will not fail.

3. To help the blog, your going to have to get your image out there more. So, its makeover time. Luckily people have to dig for your photo now, so not many know what you look like. But it is icon time now, think Cassamassina, but do it your own way. Good luck.

4. Members only message board with monthly subscripition. The "Elite Board", where the big boys pay to play. You know, keeps the riff raff out of important disscusions. (A BIG problem today!)

5. Make people register to post in any board so you can sell their personal information to advertisers and frauds. Charge to veiw reviews on the really good games (Critic's Picks)!

Well, thats enough to get you started. Have fun, and no need to thank me. I just have an eye for picking up on things like this.

your right ign does suck! It was great when I could go to sites like ign and gamespot but now any good info costs money. Its so annoying. In addition, flooding sites with ads slows the sites down considerably making them nearly unusable for elder statesman pc's. IGN used to load so much faster on my old and current jalopy system.

I thought that site was "all ads, all the time"!

No kidding, I went on ign a couple weeks, and every single time I went to a new page a Rush Hour 3 ad would pop up and block the entire screen. As if it wasn't bad enough, it slowly stretched out, and the x to make it go away was so small it took me time to find it every time. I was frustrated enough that I didn't go back to the site for a week.

Well, I've never been able to get on IGN OR Gamespot, either because they are not MAC freindly or I don't have the memory. This is one of only about 5 sites I can get on.

(Whatever happened to the rebirth of Atarinvader last year?)

If The VGC wants to make money may I suggest a Virtual donation box, for those of you with paypal or a creditcard (I say this knowing I have neither of course*).

(* By the way I never WAS able to get that O2 console. The "freind" that was gonna order it for me lost his credit.
Oh well...someday...if I live long enough!)

Is obnoxious internet advertising even effective? "Awesome! I really want to see this movie now that this idiotic pop up advertisement is annoying me every 2  seconds while I'm trying to read stuff. Off to the theater!"

If I owned a big company, I'd be very careful about Internet and TV advertising.

If I get a pop-up box going to a site I IMMIDIATELY CLOSE IT, not even looking at it, as most people I know do. And on TV, people almost always hit "mute" and start talking/eating/looking at a magazine until the show comes back. Only a REALLY effective commercial can catch someones eye like the Doritos commercial where GODZILLA was tearing up a town to get them!

Magazine ads are much more effective. While flipping pages, you simply cannot totally ignore ads there! (and many are set up to look like features with tiny(advertisement) words at bottom!

Get Firefox, and download the Adblock plus extension.  Then its "no ads, none of the time" at every single website!  But it still won't change the fact IGN looks like ass.

Seriously. I'm now dead set on not seeing the movie. Not that I was really planning on it anyway, but if I was bored and a friend asked if I wanted to see it, I probably would have gone along. Now, I will avoid it like poison.
