Tips to make the Critic more money......

Postby VideoGameCritic » July 19th, 2007, 7:21 pm
If I get a pop-up box going to a site I IMMIDIATELY CLOSE IT, not even looking at it, as most people I know do.
Blame this on the marketing people.  Not only do I immediately close pop-ups, but I don't really trust advertisers that use large banners.  Is the lack of ads a big reason why you guys like this site?

I'd come here anyway, but it definitely helps.

It wouldn't bother me if there was more ads. Really, I have derived a fair share of enjoyment from this site, and I don't mind attempts to capitalize on it.

Actually Dave, I think you could have some ads here, as long as they were for companies or sites that you have used and can personally vouch for. I think regulars of this site trust you to operate in a "non shill" way so that if you did have some ads for companies you endorse it could benefit the site.

In a way, the links section of your site already serves as this, but you get no money for it!

If ads are done right they don't hurt a sight, but the main reason I post here is  you don't have to register. That is rare and nice, even newspaper sites try to get your personal info after you click on a few stories. Give it a rest, you nosy pigs!

Also it is a smaller board, so you get a sense of people, on a huge board it just gets so random and its harder to make a point. Just fun to talk a little about games with people who actually care!

I like your reviews too Critic, once in a while I click on the older systems to get a start on a new game to try. Your site ain't flashy, to me thats a plus.

As to ads, I also would not care so long as they were unobtrusive (that is, NO POP UPS!), just set on the main page.

But the last poster brings up an interesting point. We are like family here, I too like the fact that it is a small site. I get lost in all the different aliases on Atariage or Digitpress, here it just feels more "comftorble". I'm sure we wouldn't mind a few more people posting (some girls would be nice, along with more ethnic diversity to get different perspectives), but I'd hate to see 2-300 people posting on here!

But that brings up the question WOULD ADS BE EFFECTIVE? I mean you only have us as an audiance. You don't even NEED actual ads. Just tell us to drink Limey Leonade, and we'll try it! We trust ya, Critic!

A few ads off to the side and out-of-the-way to help feed your habit would not be a bad thing at all.  Just avoid pop-up ads like the PLAGUE.  They are a pox on all that is good and sacred.

I like the site just like it is, but I wouldn't complain if you had more ads. You deserve the money, as much time as you put in on this thing. I'd stay away from pop-ups, though. Those are annoying.

And don't forget, if you really wanna be like the big boys, divide each review into about four pages, and load up each page with ads so that every review can expose the viewer to three times the advertisements!

No, wait, please don't do that.

I agree with the others that the relatively small cadre of participants here makes it all the more personal.  Also, the fact that I could say, for instance, "Hey Critic!  You Suck!" and you'd respond adds to the personal feeling here.  (Not that I would, 'cause you don't, but you see what I mean.)

And since you don't have to "register" in order to post... how come there aren't more people here?

Hmm.
