weapons in Resident Evil 4
I'm looking for some weapon tips in RE IV. Bascially I think I spent too much on upgrades on the original set of weapons, and I'm just now at the castle. What are the best weapons to buy and what upgrade strategy should I pursue? The broken butterfly looks good, but expensive....

I used the striker shotgun, punisher pistol, the advanced rifle with scope, and the Broken Butterfly. I then sold the Broken Butterfly and bought the Killer 7 later on.
The high powered pistol weapons like that are very effective against dealing with powerful enemies that move quickly (and are therefore tough to use the rocket launcher against).
Beware of bosses that you can't actually kill, only avoid. There are several of those, and if you are not careful, you'll waste enormous amounts of ammo.

The Red 9 is good, but the Blacktail is better. It might be one of the few cases where you should pick up the Red 9, and then trade for the Blacktail. As far as upgrading the Shotgun, don't worry about it. You should wait until you can get the Striker before you get a new one, which won't be for a while; until then I wouldn't worry about upgrading the original. I'd go with a Blacktail, Striker, auto rifle, and Broken Butterfly. I consider it the best combo you can get the first time through.
Well, you will find the Broken Butterfly in the castle, so don't bother buying it yet. At this point, go with the Riot Gun, TMP, best available handgun and semi-auto rifle. Also, as cheap as it is, keeping an extra rocket launcher handy makes the game's bosses 10 times easier.

I tend to ignore the TMP. It takes up space that I really don't have, so I usually just sell the ammo. The bullet is only useful against a couple of bosses anyway.
Thanks - these are great tips. I've read, though, that the blacktail isn't so great. Is it worth spending the money for the large attache case?
Where did you read that? Truly, it is basically the original handgun with higher stats, but that still puts it above the rest. I found that the Punisher, even when fully upgraded, was too weak once I got to the end of the game. The Red9 is powerful, but it takes to long to shoot and reload for a handgun. I really think the Blacktail is your best choice.
