Sony: It's going to be too early to judge until the end of time

Postby Atarifever1 » July 20th, 2007, 9:04 pm

Is it just me, or do Sony and its fans continue to push the "don't judge until" limit further and further ahead.  This Christmas they had all kinds of excuses about limited supplies making sales seem slower, and said "just wait."  Their fanboys picked up this call for help and started to explain that sales were poor in January and February because people were broke from Christmas, and they too said "just wait." Then they were impressed with their UK launch and made all kinds of comments about breaking records, but then when the sales slowed down they said "oh it's not so much that sales are slow, as we're just lucky enough to keep ahead of supply; don't pay any attention yet."  Now they claim that Christmas 2007, the PS3s second Christmas, is also not critical.   Here's a good question: when is it going to be okay to say their sales are just plain poor.  I mean, they're already trying to give themselves an out if this Christams (with a pile of games in the pipe) is bad for them.  Will it be okay to say they aren't reaching expectations by 2010 I wonder?

After reading your post, I thought for a while about what you said.  Here are a few things that I've come up with.

Sony is going to be judged whether they want to be or not.  All they can do is plod along at the course they have set out for themselves.  To this point its been mostly negative with a very few highlights sprinkled in.  They really have nowhere to go but up, so that is where alot of optimism spouts from.

I don't really see how this Christmas can be important to them.  I don't think its important for Nintendo either...or Microsoft...Its too early for this to decide anything in my honest opinion.  Each company has hills to climb before any real winner emerges.  Nintendo needs to get more solid 3rd party efforts, increase Wii production globally and make sure they don't forget about people that enjoy non-casual titles.  Microsoft has the whole hardware issues as well as the image issues with them only catering to "teh hardcore".  Sony needs to get more games out on the system, release the rumble controller, lower the price etc...

The PS2 hit the market with a price of $299 (October 26, 2000).  I once read that 75 million units were sold after the price hit $149 (May 11th 2004).  It took until after 4 years of being in stores to hit its peak in terms of sales.  Also, the console has been around 7 years and its still going strong.  I'm not saying that the PS3 will emulate this, but you have to imagine that Sony's basing their plans around the it.  Sony seems to follow the old adage of the fable, The Tortoise and the Hare..."slow and steady wins the race".

After all that, I would say, yes its too early to judge the PS3 (or any of the 3 systems for that matter.)

But yet they're always the first ones to point a finger at Nintendo before a system's even released! "Oh, the DS is going to bomb....so bad!!! The PSP is the future!!" LMAO!

Well if that's truely the case, they really have to worry.  The 360 and Wii are going to hit that price range years before the PS3 ever does.  It'll be like Saturn vs. Playstation all over again, except with them being the Saturn.  By the time they hit a good price for the common budget (your example makes it appear that it's likely even $200 will be overpriced), it'll be the next generation and it certainly will be too late.  Far too late.

I generally agree with what you  have said JLH, but I would add......

1. How long will it take to get the PS3 down to $150!?

2. Christmas is huge, always is. Everybody cares, even if it likely won't mean game over.
