Why does reading have to be reading a novel or non-fiction book? We read each others posts, game reviews, newspaper articles, other various internet articles (sports, news, etc.) I occasionally read books but read tons of material each day learning. Overall reading is not down at all.
" The same infinite detail and awareness could be projected through the radios and televisors, but are not. No, no, it's not books at all you're looking for! Take it where you can find it, in old phonograph records, old motion pictures, and in old friends; look for it in nature and look for it in yourself. Books were only one type of receptacle where we stored a lot of things we were afraid we might forget. There is nothing magical in them at all. The magic is only in what books say, how they stitched the patches of the universe together into one garment for us.
I remember in the version of Fahrenheit 451 I read in high school, Bradbury criticized an early form of 70's political correctness, saying that every minority religious/racial/ethnic group is demanding that everything they may (mis)construe as offensive be banned.  I recall him saying something to the effect of, "It is the minority organizations which are the book burners of today."

Did they ban this in Canada due to your ridiculous "hate speech" laws?  (Of course, "hate speech" is protected, and even officially promoted in Canada, as long as it's against a certain other North American country...)

Oh yes, while our soldiers are dying beside you guys in Afganistan in our greatest numbers since WW2, hearing this from one of your most widely read political thinkers makes it appear likely that is a one way street.

In any case, I can't quite hear what you said about "silly" hate laws.  I think the roar of countys banning Harry Potter books and people burning Dixie Chick CDs is muffling it a little.

Ann's seriously got to be the nuttiest chick on tv.  Next thing you'll hear is that she's coming out to support our favorite lawyer Jack.  Ann may be nuts but I'd still hit it.

Except that is individual people doing that, not our government. I'm not aware of the Harry Potter book ban thing, so please by all means post a link to a news story if you are going to drop that in here.

wur is correct in that many Canadians seem all too ready to rip America. I've met Canadians while traveling abroad that seem to froth at the mouth at the prospect of discussing how terrible America is. The irony is, while traveling outside the US (I'm actually writing this post in Mexico), I have personally experienced no anti-Americanism from anyone.... except for Canadian travellers. No country is perfect, but I would give a measure of courtesy even if I met someone from a country that I greatly disliked.

As for Coulter, like her or loathe her, that is her sense of humor, which she directs at everyone. She made jokes about Bush's alleged alcoholism in a recent column, for instance. She is simply doing the same thing as Bill Maher and Al Franken, just from the right hand side of the road.

And courtesy it is.  You guys should hear what they say about you when you aren't around.

Also, don't get too uptight about it.  It's not like you guys are the only country the average Canadian has a problem with.  Look at Quebec: They've held referendums (referendi?)  to leave this one!  And I'm from Newfoundland and Labrador, so right now isn't really the time to expect me to defend Canada.  Given the oppertunity, I'd go back to the Country of Newfoundland in a second (we still all learn the anthem, just in case).

Hey Atraifever, you must have a lot more star gazing since Bush won his relelction bid - I remember half of Hollywood pledged to migrate to your country if he would win!

My favorite book is Robinson Crusoe, and I almost lost my mind when Cast Away came out.

Something about being on an island all alone (and yes, without video games) completely intriuges me.

Yeah, I think we helped rig the second election just for that reason.  You guys can keep your trash.
