MY brother bought a PS2 a few years ago, becuase it was b/c with the origional PS and he wanted to finish some FF he loved. Well, he didn't finish it because he gets crushed by the same boss, (lol, no help here.) and 3-d games do not interest him off. He has tried but there is no hope, he likes shooting games, but did not fall in love with either GTA or even RE4.
I reccomended buying an FC Twin, he did, and loves it. He bought a couple lots of NES games for $40 each and now has 50 some NES games but no SNES of any value. His tastes run to sidescrolling and top down shooters and fighters, his favorite game isl Contra I for NES.
So, to give him ideas to help find new games in this genre for years to come, please list good 2-d games (and especially shooters and fighters) for PS2 PS1 SNES and NES. Also, if there are stinkers to avoid that is just as valuable.
Thanks.

I would try Einhander for the PS1. It's a terrific shooter.

Despite my Sega fanboyism, I have to admit it's nice to hear about someone choosing an older system because they are unsatisfied with a newer one. I hate the NESes defect rate, and I vastly prefer the Genisis to the SNES, but I know I have more in common with people who like Contra 1 or Super Mario World than I do with people playing GTA.
As far as my reccomendations go, I don't think it quite qualifies in the genre you're looking at, but Bionic Commando is a masterpiece IMHO. Also, I think Timeslip (SNES) is a diamond in the rough if ever there was one (it's Contra like).
On another note, tell him to get a Genesis, as they usually run about $5 and also do well with those genres.

I like the older systems better too. 2-D rules!
I have not had an NES in a long time but I remember it well.
Reccomend: ZANAC, ALL SUPER MARIO GAMES, GRADIUS, LIFEFORCE, ICE CLIMBER, DONKEY KONG, GAUNTLET... if you like adventures then ZELDA, ZELDA 2, THE GOONIES 2, METROID, MIGHTY BOMB JACK... if you can handle weird controls, CLU CLU LAND is a fave maze game.
SNES: MS. PAC-MAN(ALSO ON NES), SUPER MARIO WORLD, SUPER MARIO ALL STARS, ZELDA: LINK TO THE PAST, PINBALL: BEHIND THE MASK, ARKANOID 2, R*TYPE and GRADIUS 3.
just a few to start you off! Happy gaming!

Yeah, that does look Contra like and I had never heard of it. I will look that one up.
Thanks guys, and keep em coming!
Off topic, but sorta on topic too. I am done buying systems at launch (technicly my wife bought the Wii, but it was for me, and I didn't return it lol.) It just takes too long for systems to get going, a person like me who likes to buy used games on the cheap is just screwing himself getting a new system. It takes a couple of years to get a variety of good games anyway, and if you come late to the party older games that you have never played yet are a bargain.
I think the DS is another excellent example of this, and I got that at launch too and had only Mario64 for the longest time. Now she is starting to flower.
I just have the Wii blues right now, the last 3 games we have tried haven't been very fun at all. I just got Red Steel off of EBAY and I resold it that same night! So I have it for 5 more days to play until it sells, and that is long enough. Just WAY too cinematic, and dumb, people yelling "Die Pig!" and "You Bastard!" as my future dad in law limps along teaching me the finer points of sword fighting (which was the most fun part of the game by the way). This game is not near as fun as Goldeneye to me, I would have been far betyer off getting the other Timesplitters for GC.
I could go on and on, but long story short realistic games and me don't jive. If Mario Galaxy doesn't blow me away, than my Wii could become a Wiiware machine, at this point I am more excited about upcoming DS titles, and may start scouring for a GBA lot on EBAY.
Please don't send me any 360 or PS3 propoganda, if you would send me one, I would just try to hang myself, but, crap, the controllers are wireless!
Just kidding, but if someone out there does not have a Wii who's been looking, don't feel bad, she ain't ready to come out of the oven quite yet anyhow.
P.S. Critic we were playing RBI baseball for NES and I loved it! It is fun, and yes the music is unbelieveable, but we wouldn't turn it off because you can't play VG Baseball without the sound effects. I saw you gave it a poor review but gave the sequel a great one, well I have it on order and expect to be in hog heaven when it comes! Bert Blythleven rules, but he is a chessy announcer! Hey Bert, go circle yourself!

I agree with Fever on Bionic Commando. It's a real classic, and the gameplay is just as fun today as it ever was then.
Heh, Steerforth, I think you are a very particular gamer, as I've had no real problem finding a bevy of fun games for Wii so far. But then again, I think you realize this. (-:
