Addicted to a mini game... (can you beat my time?)

Postby Paul Campbell » July 29th, 2007, 6:44 am

We just has some friends over for a few days from out of state, and the husband is a somewhat avid gamer.  We played alot of games the first two nights they were here, but the second half of the second night and the two nights after that were completely dominated by one mini game that literally sucked a minimum of 4 hours out of each night's play time.

If you have played through Raving Rabids on the Wii, you probably did like me and did just enough to get past the skydiving level where you maneuver through smoke circles.   Somehow we got into a  battle of one-upping each other's times, and the game suddenly became an addiction.  As of about 2:30am this morning, the new record, held by myself, is 31.69 seconds.  If you give this little game some time and practice, you will find it is a gem of absolutely flawless play control, intensity, and fun.  I have never uttered the phrase "just one more and I SWEAR I am going to bed" so many times in such a short period in my life.... sometimes playing for another 2 hours after saying that.  If you have access to this game, I HIGHLY recommend you revisit this little mini game and try to beat my score.  In the process you will find yourself having an amazing time.  (hint: the secret is in controlling your free-fall as fast and smooth as possible at the beginning)

Addicted to a mini game... (can you beat my time?)

Sounds like the start of Yoshi's Touch and Go.

That's basically what most early games were like.  My father and brother kept one uping each other in Battlezone until they were incredible at it.  My floor in my university residence was a week setting new records in "Dragster" for the 2600.  Me and one of my friends play that Frog Bog game, or whatever it's called, for an hour at a time no problem on the Flashback 2 (where you directly compete for score).

This is the reason I don't understand when people make fun of the Wii for having "nothing but mini-games".  Firstly, it isn't true, and secondly, all my best time spent playing multiplayer games basically has been minigames (though we didn't call them that back then).

I've never played RR games, but I know what you mean by a game being addictive, the "just one more level!" with me right now is BOOKWORM for the GBA. Planet Puzzle League/DS is a better game, but I am mainly addicted to this right now, maybe 'cause I've always liked word games. As the levels get higher more and more burning tiles appear and you gotta think fast to keep from getting burned! The most maddening thing is the game does not recognize some words like YUCA and GIN, yet seems to accept some I've never known were words like FID and RIWE!So you are tempted to keep trying anything!

I'm on level 19 now, CHEIF EDITOR! Anyone done better on the GBA?

Sorry, now back to RAVING RABBIDS!

Yep. 23 is my best, and I'm almost there again.

Koopa....I've no doubt I'll catch up to you, because for some reason the higher levels are not constant. Level 18 was TERRIBLE, started with 6 burning tiles one of which was Q! I thought I'd never beat it! Yet, level 19 I've played through 12 turns and gotten bonus green and gold tiles but not one "burning" one yet! I think if you do really well, making long words on one level, it eases up a bit. I keep saving after every few turns, so in case I get an impossible situation (like burning QXZZZ tiles drop!) I can go back to last save and try again.

I'm a word game fanatic. Before this it was HANGMAN!

And you're right many early coin-ops were like mini games. It just kept getting harder as you tried for the high score. What was once ARCADE is now MINI or PUZZLE games!
