Gamestop Complaints

Postby JustLikeHeaven1 » June 2nd, 2008, 11:40 am

Wow this is the wrong website to make a post like that.  You do realize that alot of people here are collectors and avid gamers since the 70s and 80s...Gamestop has done everything in its power to ruin videogame collecting prior to the PS2 era.  Consider yourself lucky if you can still find N64, PS1 or Dreamcast games at your local Gamestop...its also a miracle if they are in the original packaging.  Most of them have wiped out there stocks of older games merely focusing on newer stuff.  I can't blame them, but I certainly won't buy any of there used goods currently in there.

I used to be able to shop for Genesis, NES and Super Nintendo games at Funcoland...oh wait Gamestop corp gobbled them up and turned them into... more crappy gamestops.  Now I have to shop online to get my old Atari, NES and other classic console games.  Luckily for me there are still a few mom and pop shops where I can travel to and find older games.

Gamestop smother all there used games in tons of stickers, "new games" are already opened which means they are NOT new, the shelves are a mess, and it also damn near impossible to buy a new game without being hassled to buy the used copy for $2 cheaper.

Why on earth would I want to buy a used game that is merely $3-4 cheaper?  That is not a good deal at all.  Maybe if it was in immaculate condition, but that is never the case at Gamestop.  The only reason Gamestop stays in business is because it caters to teenagers and young gamers who don't know any better.  I don't know a single self respecting gamer that shops there.  Also most employees are rather clueless to anything but the most popular games.

Yea most of us are going to come off sounding like gaming snobs, but the reason we post here instead of ign or gamespot forums is because we have to get away from all the corporate BS and whiny 14 year olds.  Besides all those sites and stores care about is making there wallets fatter.  I go to independent sites to read about games to get away from annoying gamers that work at gamestops...most of them have absolutely no clue what they are talking about, and nothing will ever change my mind about that.  I cannot stand that "deer in the headlights" gaze employees get when you ask about something that isn't Madden, GTA, Halo or [insert popular franchise here].

Also, maybe the place wouldn't be a complete mess if the stores weren't crammed into tiny spaces.  They have tons of inventory and absolutely no place to put it.  If more than 6 people are in the store its almost unbearable to walk around because of the lack of space.

These stores have a bad reputation for a reason...

I've been to bad gamestops in my life, but they aren't all bad. The ones I go to actually have very nice people working there, and games are fairly well organized. In fact, I've never really had a serious problem at any of the stores I frequent, save for a lack of GBA games.

The local stores are where I have this problem. I don't visit the local guys because the guy at outlet #1 is too busy playing games and eating Mcdonalds in the backroom to notice my presence and outlet #2 usually has a large group of buddies in playing D&D in the middle of the store. In both cases I can't even get an employee to aknowledge my presence, let alone allow me to drop some cash. I just wish there was a game store that allowed gamers to walk in, pay and get out without the BS.

The local store in my hometown, like everything in my hometown, is perfect.  It has a small inventory, true (although having any inventory in a town with 5000-6000 people in a store solely dedicated to gaming is pretty amazing), but there's pretty decent selection for that.  There are NES, SMS, Genesis, SNES, 2600, Colecovision, PS1, N64, Dreamcast, PS2, Xbox, Gamecube, Gamegear, GBA, DS,  Xbox 360, and Wii games.  The guy has a little doorbell chime that goes off when you go in and he comes out from the back when he hears someone there (that also keeps down on shop lifting I guess).  He has old arcade clocks from the 80s on the walls, framed Donkey Kong stickers from 1982 or so, and some plug and play Intellivision stuff hooked to the TV.  It's very nice.

As a side note, you may notice I didn't say he had a PS3 section.  The local movie/game rental store (also locally owned) also doesn't stock PS3 stuff, but does have 360 and Wii stuff.  I find it odd since when I got my Xbox a few Christmases back I was home for Christmas and the only thing the town didn't have was Xbox stuff (it was like I was in Japan).  Now the only thing the town doesn't do is PS3.  The WalMart carries it though.  In a tiny little section next to the huge, and terribly busy, PSP section.  Maybe small towns only have room for two consoles.

only about 10 percent of the time I go into a gamestop are the employees actually working.   Most of the time they are just standing around talking about video games.   Sometimes they are even playing the display games, even if the customers want to play them.
Ironically enough that's one complaint I'll never make against EB. I find their employees work hard and are quite helpful and knowledgeable. They're overworked and forced to try to shovel garbage down gamers' throats. I've never once seen an EB employee playing a game and most time, there is a huge lineup at the counter.

I guess my store is different.   I live in a small industrial city that is economically depressed.  Hardly anybody is ever in the store, except on big game launch days.   I would hardly call the workers at the gamespot in my town hard working.

Infact I remember back when they had the Dreamcast on display many years ago, the employees spent the entire time I was in the store playing soul calibur.  I really wanted to play the game, and asked if I could play the winner of the current game.   They said no.   Wow were they horrible people.  That was back when they had full games in the display units.   Now they just have demo games.   I wonder if they made that switch to keep the employees off the system.  After all you can only play a demo for so long.

It's not so much the fact that many of the games being sold as NEW are opened and look USED, but rather it's the point that there's stickers all over the case and everything and I could probably go somewhere else and get the same game for the exact same price or CHEAPER and have it actually be sealed.

If theft is so much of a problem then why can't they do what every other store does and implement a security device on their games? It's not that difficult!
Let me say: I don't give a crap if a Gamestop employee is irritated. Everyone that I have ever spoke to there are huge nerds, irritated by customers, and possess the people skills of an Nazi SS officer. Quit talking to nerd # 2 about how many hours you have poured into whatever MMORPG game you have replaced your social life with and quit trying to sell me a dumb video game mag that covers First Person Shooters only.

Go screw yourself, nerd and get a real job if you don't like it. Time to quit playing with toys if you can't deal with the boys.

Amen, brother! Amen! That was the best post I have ever read on this or any other gaming site. You just single-handedly put into words the frustration of every gamer who has ever had to deal with Gamestop. You are now my hero, sir.

We have about 3 gamestops in our town.  It's wierd, I've actually heard the manager at the one 'good gamestop' arguing on the phone with the other one.  This apparently happens alot (according to the tone of the phone call).

Someone said they are idoits, and that's not true.  Sure, there are a few sprinkled in there, but don't let them steal all of your attention.

This is a fascinating thread.  The people working at GameStop are like those at any retail store.  You get a few jerks, but for the most part they are very nice and helpful.

So why does GameStop suck so much?  It all starts at the top.  Sometimes I think the upper management doesn't know jack about video games.  You'd think that since games are "all they do", they'd be pretty good at it, but they aren't.

First of all, they seem to only get one or two copies of the "niche" games that real gamers want.  Why would any store order just two copies of a game?  It makes no sense!  Next, the prices are always pretty much the maximum retail price, so you can rule out ever getting a good deal.  And then there's the store organization, which is a disaster.  New games mixed with old.  Games out of order.  Ugly stickers covering all the boxes.  Sometimes they even place the stickers on the spine of the game so you can't even tell what it is!

Okay, keeping the games in order is probably a pain, but isn't that what you're getting paid for?  Other than ringing up customers?

A few weeks ago I was at a GameStop and there were three guys working there.  One was playing a game that was set up, and the other two were talking.  I stood at the counter for a minute or two, and finally said, "Umm, can I buy this?"  When store's make it hard for you to give them your money, you have to question the business model.

One last thing - when you "call" an employee on trying to sell you an opened (used) game, they get really irritated, like you're doing something wrong!

I would be lead to believe that working between 55 and 60 hours a week to make up for not having hours in my store would be working harder.  Certain customers certainly need to be a little more understanding and a little less demanding.  Also, Gamstops and resturaunts are in totally different leagues.  So get over yourself.
Now, if you want to complain about our unorganized shelving, go work at a Gamestop for a month.  We work very hard to make sure that our walls are in order, but we cannot follow every customer around and pick up after each and every one of them.  We are only allotted so many payroll hours.
This is funny, I actually stopped by a Gamestop this very afternoon to look for a birthday gift for my son.  I was the only customer in the store and there were two guys working behind the counter.  As I looked through the incredibly out-of-order and catastrophic shelf of Xbox and then PS2 games, the two of them simply stood around behind the counter waxing back and forth about (I kid you not) what type of gum they preferred and why.  The merchandise was a disorganized disaster, and which flavor of Stride they liked was all they could sit around and talk about.  Now this was 4:30 p.m. on a Monday, so it's not like the store had to deal with a crush of customers all day long - everyone was in school!  I'm more than happy to concede that maybe these two clowns are the exception rather than the rule, but you have to understand that a single incident like this is generally more than enough to drive a potential customer away from Gamestop stores for good.
Sudz
p.s. - I ended up not buying any of the 3 games I came in to buy simply because I couldn't find them in that mess.  Per your suggestion I WILL be going onto Amazon.com to buy them.  Way to represent your company.
