Ninja Gaiden DS

Postby wur1 » November 10th, 2008, 9:23 pm

I wanted to recommend this game to the Critic.  It's one of the best games I've played in a while--they removed the terrible camera and excessive difficulty from the Xbox version; it feels just right.  It also probably has the best touch-screen and microphone usage I've seen in a game.  (You wake up an old man by calling his name into the microphone!)

It's the game that Zelda DS wanted to be.

I actually just bought this over the weekend. I'm only an hour or two into it, but it is a great game so far. I wouldn't go as far as saying it is what Zelda wanted to be, but it does work very well.

One of the things about the difficulty is that for me, it is at that perfect difficulty level. I've died a few times, and some fights I'm really worried if I'm going to make it through, but I always seem to be able to proceed.

And I still don't like the whole microphone thing... I live by myself and I still feel foolish yelling into it!

I gave this a rental, found the "scribble-based" combat terribly unresponsive and unsatisfying. Couldn't get into it. And this from a huge fan of the series, both on the NES and 360.

I really like Ninja Gaiden DS, and it does have extremely responsive controls for the touchscreen, and no horrible camera problems..  Still, I think I preferred Zelda DS much more, and I think the controls were at least as well implemented if not better in that one.  I am not a big fan of the Ninja Gaiden series but am a big fan of Zelda, so that could have had something to do with it.

My main problem was that the combat was far too easy, and the sailing parts dragged on and on.

I think the difficulty of the game might have taken a swing too far to the easy side.   Its by far the easiest Ninja Gaiden game I've played.   Some of the bosses don't do much besides just stand there while you destroy them.   The actual levels were far harder than the boss battles, and they didn't feel that hard either.   Bosses should never be the easiest part of the game, but in this game they are.

I will say the controls and graphics were fantastic, and I had a lot of fun playing this game.   But still, 90 percent of the bosses were jokes, which is obscene for a Ninja Gaiden game.

It takes me about three tries to defeat a boss. That's sufficiently difficult for me, at least.

I don't know. I still haven't played through it. I'm much slower with games than most here. :-)
