I was just wondering, what would you guys consider to be your top five favorite music tracks in gaming? Mine are:
1). Super Mario 64-The water stage with the pirate ship. Even when I was fifteen playing this, I thought there was just something enchanting(stupid word, but it fits) about this song. I could never get enough of this song.
2). Final Fantasy VI-The opera scene music. This completely blew my mind when I first played this! It was the first time that music from a game seemed like something more than what it was. Great stuff!
3). Faxanadu-Overworld theme. I just always loved the rhythm of this song. It put you(well, maybe just me) in the right headspace to play the game. Funny how, back in the day, sometimes the music played a part in motivating us(well, maybe just me...again).
4). River City Ransom-the main theme. It just fit the characters and the overall style of the game. It was just some goofy song, with a catchy beat. However, I could stop playing this game tomorrow and would never forget how it sounded.
5). Road Rash-take your pick. I always loved the music to the original road rash trilogy. However great the soundtrack to the 3DO version was, the original genny versions completely trounced it, in my opinion. I miss good ol' static rock and roll!;-)
How about you guys?
Merry Christmas, by the way!

Great topic! It's gonna be very hard to narrow this down to just 5 tracks. I'll give it a shot though.
1. The Legend of Zelda Theme - I think the Zelda series has some of the best music in all of gaming, but the main track is the best. It's especially nice to hear it evolve over the years. Hearing it fully ochestrated can give you shivers.
2. Metroid - Brinstar Theme - Metroid is another classic Nintendo franchise full of great music. I've always been partial to the Brinstar track.
3. Castlevania - Vampire Killer Track - This is the track on level 1 in the NES game. Its such has such a great gothic sound despite the limited technology. This is another track that I love to hear in its evolved form.
4. Metal Gear Solid Theme - Just another great compostion. It really delivers with pulse pounding beats. It makes me happy everytime I hear it.
5. Mega Man III - Snake Man's Theme - It's hard to make a list like this and not include something from Mega Man. I've always really dug the music from Snake Man's level.
I have many more that I could include, Streets of Rage 2 has great music, Final Fantasy is chalk full of solid tracks...I'm sure I'll add a few more to my list.
Merry Christmas to everyone that celebrates!

Good call. The C64 had some great music. But I would have to say that the title track of Bedlam and the 1st level of Aliens were better.

The C=64 is a fricken gold mine for cool music you just can't get anywhere else. Some of my favorites:
Rambo first blood part II (title screen/credits)
Ninja
Zoids
Super Cycle
