I haven't played E.T. in many, many years, but back in the day, when I was around 8 years old or so, I thought it was fairly enjoyable, and I knew what you were supposed to do. Definitely wasn't one of the best for the system, but from my memories, it definitely wasn't bad, either. I just received E.T. in a lot of games I bought, and this discussion makes me want to play it.
Anyway, as far as games I regret playing, I don't know. I have regretted buying games, but not so much playing them. I suppose I regretted playing Alien Syndrome for the Wii since it was a boring piece of crap (But then again I'm kinda happy I played it because I had rented it, and it prevented me from making the mistake of buying it).
One game that I remember regretting getting was Hydlide for the NES. I especially regretted it because my Mom had bought it for me, and I had picked it out. I thought it was gonna be a game like Zelda, and aside from the fact that it was a totally unplayable turd, it was exactly like Zelda!
I played E.T. a long time ago, never knew it was a legend, like Mozart is saying, and it was OK. I just remember not knowing what in the heck to DO! You raise ET's neck to have him fly out of pits right? And if I remember some of the parts are hidden in the pits? Trying to make the phone I guess?
...
Remember Indiana Jones for 2600? Kind of the same way. We played that and played that but never really got anywhere....that game even had a gun, but we would always die before we made too much progress.
Well, ET had a relatively comprehenvise manual that explained the game in detail, telling you exactly what you were supposed to do, while Raiders of the Lost Ark just helped you a bit on your way, and gave you some vague hints from that point on. I can understand people complaining that Raiders is tough to figure out, but ET told you everything you needed to know - it's not the game's fault you didn't read the manual it came with.
Toss someone a copy of, say, Space Shuttle, and they're not going to understand a thing until they check the manual, though you don't really see people complaining about how impossible that game is (they do complain about how boring it is, though, which I agree on, but I really can't think of a 2600 game that both require a manual to understand and is considered a great game).

I hate ET but despite how I play the game and then get angry and then want to destroy my 2600, I am still intent on beating the stupid thing. But every time I play I get angry because evry time I get all the phone pieces, I go to the launch area. I'm about to call in the ship. My thumb is almost on the button, and then... Frickin government agent takes my phone! Happens every time.

That's why one of the first things you should do is locate the context-sensitive area that sends the Government agent back to his "office". Then when the agent comes by, click it so he goes away, then go back to the call area.
I always make a point of making that the first thing I locate and commit to memory.

Also, if "finishing" is all he's after, he could go to game 3 with the "no secret agents." That's a good way to practice how to play for the tougher difficulties.

Guys, I not gonna take back what I said about E.T. I really did enjoy White Men Can't Jump more.
The idea here is to think of the game you either hate the most or regret playing the most(Often the same),not bash others for there opinions of E.T. and no I will not change my rank it still in my eyes deserves a -1/10 END OF STORY!!!!!!
If I ever play E.T. again it will be for complete satire.
After E.T. number 2 on the games I regret most would be Custer's Revenge followed closely by Kabuki Warriors for Xbox.

See Steer; I rest my case.
No: "Really, you can't fall in the hole on the spaceship scene?"
No: "I thought just touching the scientist put you in a hole. Guess not. My mistake."
Just: "if I play it again, it will be for satire."
And thus doth the legend of the "worst game ever" grow. Based on nothing but previous lists and the will to believe.

No opinion offered here is ever free of scrutiny. This isn't the basement meeting of a secret society, it's an internet forum. Discussion, disagreement, and debate -- learn to expect it.
And in this case... the stated opinion's reliance on status quo as a basis for the argument virtually demands scrutiny.

E.T. is my favorite Atari 2600 game!
Do I regret playing it?? Noooo way.
I can also say E.T. was one of the few 2600 games I played it in the 80's... I thought the graphics looked cool and I found a flower,...wasn't yrs later 'till the internet age when I printed the manual, I was able to read and solve it, which made the game that much more cool.
I'm kinda surprised some people struggle so much with this game, are you not gamers?? If you can handle Ghost n Goblins, Contra and Ninja Gaiden, E.T. on 2600 should be a walk in the park!

You know what? I agree. E.T. was no where near the worst game ever. It just happens to be based on a very famous movie which is why it ranks so high on the worst game ever list. I also beat it several times myself. While it certainly is not a good game it is not as bad as it is made out to be. You want to play a really bad game? Try Back to the Future 1 and 2 on the NES!
