RDI Halcyon (the holy grail acquired)

Postby Marriott_Guy1 » May 1st, 2009, 3:08 pm

Hello all.

Well, I finally scored myself the rare RDI Halcyon, well as least most of it anyways (details to follow).  For those that are not familiar with this system, this is the most obscure systems that has ever been released.  Debuting in 1985, it was the first Laserdisc-based video game console.  There are some questions as to if this hardware was actually released for sale to the general public.  For more information, see the web page on my site listed below:

http://www.videogameconso...elibrary.com/pg80-rdi.htm

I guess I better explain the reference above ("...well at least most of it").  I acquired the LD portion of this system - it is missing the 'HAL' computer module.  Hence, I can not play any games on it even if I had any of the games that were released for it (all two of them).  I can, however, play any Laserdisc movie (my Pioneer LaserActive now has a friend).  Still, it was an opportunity to garner a great piece of video game history that I couldn't pass up.

Here are the small pics of the actual system I purchased (high res pics to be posted at VGCL sometime this weekend).  I am not trying to show off or anything like that - just trying to share some gaming history since there are not allot of pictures of this beast floating around out there in web world.  On to the pics, listed in no particular order...

I'll let you know a bit more info once I have a chance to mess around a bit with this unit.  Thanks all and, as always, any comments or questions are always welcomed.  Happy gaming!

I loved the designs of VCD/LaserDisc/CD players back then... What a Rare Rhino!

Unfortunately no - I never did acquire the computing / logic component.  My partner in crime (98PaceCar) does have the complete RDI Halcyon and its two sole game releases.  Pics including game play vids are posted :

I also have the LaserDisc player portion of it. So I got some questions How do you get the discs to play and do I need a special remote for it?
