I never saw the awesomity of Joust. The controls were slippery and the ostrich didn't seem to jump/flutter unles syou mashed Cross. The controls alone destroy the game.

Anyone who can't appreciate the sublime experience that is Joust immediately loses my respect...oops, too late. Oh, well. There's always Scream Arena! Now THAT'S quality.

HOW DARETH THEE DESECRATE THE GREAT ENTITY "JOUST"!

Haresay, I dare-a-say!

..well, joust can be a fantastic or crummy game depending on the emulation / translation and how good the controls are. Joust is my second favorite game of all time (after LADYBUG) and my favorite VERSION of it, believe it or not, is the Atari 5200! The "loose" sticks on that unit actually make it feel like you are really flying! (on the other hane the GBA "williams classics" cart is terrible)...as mentioned this is a truly ORIGINAL concept with lots of different waves and a fantastic feel. Having said that, I never could get into "Joust 2" (on the PSX Midway classics disc)....joust one of those things...

Rampart is in my top ten favorite games of all time, and since this is a direct port, I feel like the controls were too haywire to be fun. The original used a trackball, so this version just "felt" terrible since you had to use the control pad. If this is the first time you played it, the controls probably didn't drive you bonkers like it did me.

Did you like the SNES port of Rampart? I had a blast playing that with friends at the time. The scaling graphics were nice too.

Koopa, I think it's probably the PS2 controller.  It's not made for button mashing.  I love Joust and have several versions.  I almost never play the gamecube or ps2 Jousts because of the controllers.  It's too sludgy.

[QUOTE=Zenzerotron]Let me warn you Koopa, while the first Midway Treasures is jam-packed with greatness, it was all downhill from there. #2 only has a handfull of good games, it's only worth picking up if you're a Mortal Kombat and Primal Rage fan. #3 was "scraping the bottom of the barrel". It only features EIGHT games, and they are all racing games. It's ONLY good game is Hydro Thunder.

If you want another compliation with a high quality margin of games like the first Midway Arcade Treasures, let me recommend Taito Legends as your next purchase.

Your anti-Joust comment displeases Zen greatly

If there's a better game featuring dueling knights riding ostridges, let us know

And thus you see my point, Joust is a completely orginal game. Truely orginal video games are a very rare thing. When a totally orginal game is FUN, it's sacred thing.

I love Mortal Kombat and have always wanted to try NARC and Primal Rage, so I will eventually get MT2. Sweet crap! They put Hydro Thunder (one of my favorite arcade games ever made) on PS2/cube! No matter how bad MT3's other games are, I will get that soon just for Hyrdo Thunder. I have had my eye on Taito Legends for a long time, and I promise you it will be in my PS2 very soon. joust is very original, I'll give it that. However it, is not fun at all! Hell, fun and joust (it doesn't even deserve capitalization) don't belong in a sentence together! Killer 7 was one of the most innovative games that will ever be made, and oh my god, it SUCKS!

Zen, I'm disappointed in you. This is the first time you have ever been wrong! <gasp>

I *feel* I'm a very good judge of character as far as knowing what games have aged poorly. I played Space Invaders and Asteriods to death as a youngster, but now, I'll admit, those 2600 games collect more dust then my Gamecube!

Having said that, I must tell you that Joust hasn't aged a bit. Roborton hasn't aged, Ms Pac-man hasn't aged, Mr Do! hasn't aged, some games are immortal. Joust is immortal.

One weird little tibit......Midway was working on a first-person-perspective Joust game for N64 but it was cancelled. I recall reading about it in EGM's gossip column for a few months. No screen-shots of the game were ever shown, this game was killed pretty quickly into production.

First Person Joust on the Nintendo Wii..................this is what Zen desires. It'll never happen, much like how I've always wanted a stylis-controlled Qix on DS. This is what you get for being agonstic, wishes never come true

PS2 only has a standalone port of Arctic Thunder.

Hydro Thunder was ported to the Sony Playstation, Nintendo 64, and Sega Dreamcast. What appears on Midway Arcade Treasures 3, despite the Critic's review of it, is a straight port of the Dreamcast port of Hydro Thunder. So if you own the Dreamcast game, it's not worth it unless there are other titles on there that interest you. I don't recommend it, it doesn't deserve the B he gave it in my opinion. And Hard Drivin' is on Midway Arcde Treasures 2, the Critic meant to say Race Drivin' in his MAT3 review.

I just picked up Midway volume 3 and am loving it.

The only games included here I actually played in the arcade were Stun Runner and of course Super Off Road.  The emulation for Stun Runner seems really sped up, but I cant wait to play off road with other people.

I am enjoying Off Road Thunder more than Arctic Thunder so far, although both games are very enjoyable.  Rush The Rock is pretty bad, and I am still getting the hang of Rush 2049

Still though...how can you denigrate this collection?  Feels really solid to me.

And arcade perfect MK2 cannot be overlooked...
