I love Midway Treasures!!!

Postby Leo1 » June 9th, 2007, 8:46 pm

The quality of it is poor. The Xbox version has a bug that currupts your save file after every few hours of play (As does the PS2 versions, was fixed for the GCN). Race Drivin's emulation quality sucks, STUN Runner's speed and fps are all screwed up. Rush The Rock is barely controllable and doesn't even have the original music from the arcade game, its been replaced for this collection. Hydro Thunder, Rush 2049, Badlands, Super Off-Road, and Off Road Thunder are all well done.

But the bugs, absolute lack of any cool extras, and having almost half the games not even run halfway like they're supposed to meant I couldn't recommend it a year ago and I can't recommend it now, especially since two of the best games weren't even arcade ports but just Dreamcast ports that many interested in MAT3 might already own.

Midway Arcade Treasures 2 was worth it for Timber alone. Total Carnage was nice on it. I enjoyed APB, Championship Sprint, and Hard Drivin' even though they couldn't match their arcade counterparts due to control differences. And I enjoyed checking out everything else even if they weren't games I'd frequently come back to, besides the fighting games which I largely ignored. Only major problem I saw was Wizard of Wor was all screwed up.

Too bad Midway's decided selling a couple classics a year on XBLA and Sony's online store is better, I was looking forward to a new Midway Arcade Classics on the 360 that brought together the past three versions while fixing bugs, and adding in another 20 or so games from their past catalog. Don't see that happening now and I doubt they'd ever go beyond the games we already own on these three collections for these download services.

No matter how bad MT3's other games are, I will get that soon just for Hydro Thunder. [/QUOTE]

Unless you can get it somewhere in the $5-$10 range, I don't think it's even worth it for that game, especially since it's a port of the Dreamcast game, and yet it has even more slowdown than it did on Sega's system.  And that lack of quality extends to the rest of the collection, which has some pretty bad load times, a lazy interface, and no worthwhile extras.  And Race Drivin' the kind of game that's only good nowadays to mercilessly mock.

The Xbox port of Hydro Thunder doesn't have the frame rate issues of the PS2 and GC ports. Load times are decent as well.

Some of the games are well done however, such as Super Off-Road, so I wouldn't say it wasn't worth 5$. I like Hard Drivin' and Race Drivin's on MAT2 and MAT3, my main issues with them are the emulation quality of each is questionable.

I think Joust just may be one of those games that you HAVE to play as God intended - in an arcade, or at least on an actual Joust arcade machine.  The slamming of the buttons and jerking back and forth of the joystick can't be emulated by a game pad or console controller.  I can see where this game would lose a LOT in translation.  I imagine it would be the same for Tempest, if that ever ended up on a compilation.  Playing with a console controller just wouldn't recreate the fun of spinning that knob around as you fire down the tube.

Well I did get my "new" copy at EB for $10...I would say for Arctic and Off Road Thunder and Rush 2049 it is worth it

You must mean Hydro Thunder because Arctic Thunder isn't on Midway Arcade Treasures 3.

But I'm interested to hear that the framerate and load times of the PS2 and Gamecube versions are worse than the Xbox one.  It would seem that not all ports are created equal and it's the reason I'm for reviewing multiple versions of each game when its on multiple consoles.

Well I liked the first one alot, and the second one a bit but the third was terrible.  Hydrothunder is a port of the DC title so I hear.  The games are just a bit dull.
Joust is a superb game, I have always liked it and I have it on   My fave game on the second one is Wizard of wor.  I waited so long to get a great version of that game.  I just wish they would put GORF out now.

I just picked up Midway Classics 2 this weekend on the xBox for $5, and on this version at least, Narc is missing its FBI seal with the message that Winners Don't Use Drugs.  Which is too bad.  It's worse than playing Road Blasters and not seeing the tee-shirt contest screen.

Also on Narc, the music in the final level is buggy and comes and goes.
