male 16 and white, wow the diversity here is through the roof!

Don't worry, once the proper government bureaucrats are informed they'll mandate an affirmative action program for this message board.  There will be harshly regimented quota system for how many of each ethnic group can contribute to a discussion on this website, as well as special minority grants for Hispanics and blacks to buy Xbox 360's.

This is turning into an off-gaming question post so to get back on track, I know of some OLDER women that play games, but how
about young;i.e. girls and teenage females? I guess this is
something Koopa would know, being 13...are younger girls interested in videogaming?

Also, Dennis, I agree with most of your assesments but NATIVE AMERICANS is correct. Yes, they migrated here but in PREHISTORIC times...before the land bridge disappeared. ALL HUMANS are from Africa (Not that I personally am human. Alien Implant, 'doncha know. It's on record. ) Anyway, Europeans, Australians, Kinko-go barians.... are all from AFRICA, (check out "Lucy" and "Out of Africa" at your library..also "Eve's Children" the documentary). If people came to a land before written history they are "natives" of that land; otherwise, not.

Alien my whole girlfriends family play video games, so that's 20, 17, 12, 12 year old females.  The 12 year olds have been into gaming for the past year since their Dad got them a PS2.  They're pretty good as well from what I have seen and play all sorts of games.

OK, i had planned on holding out for 5 days, but I think we can all see the trend that is emerging.  This probably isn't a surprise to anyone (a few even said that), but why?

Is it the site?  Message forums in general?  Because this site has a focus also on classic gaming?

I don't know, and I don't think that this accurately represents the diversity in gamers in general, but then again, it might.

Specially, I was really interested to see if any African-Americans particpated.  We know the market is skewed towards men and the age groups listed here, but race TOO?

I don't want to turn this into a race thing, but I'm just really intrigued by this...any thoughts?

That's interesting about girls. It would seem that yes, younger
women (and women in general) play games these days almost as much
as men but they don't get on forums and talk about it. I'll leave it to others to specualte why girls stay away from guy-dominated forums.

Race is more confusing. I would have expected at least a couple
black/hispanic/ whatever to show up as well. Could be a couple of things. I think we would all feel uncomftorble to be the only YWM on a board of "others"....that could be it. I myself am not crazy about being "gramps" on here (except my age does make me supremely wise and, I'm the captain!)...also I read in a time magazine awhile back that while black/hispanic/etc.. people buy as many videogames as YWM's, they are , as groups, not into "surfing the net" as much (why, it didn't say)....

(like playing/making/editing video games, posting on message boards, etc.)

Also, the majority of game developers are white or asian.  White and asian people make games from the White and Asian perspective.  Most gaming icons that are human are white or asian.  Most animals are usually voiced by white or asian voice actors.  I think this contributes alot, too.

R.Jones "...most games tend to feature white or asian game characters"...

Hmmm! I didn't even think of that but you are right. Of course, fighting games like the Street fighter series(with black, male and female, indian, asian, etc... characters) are pretty diverse but It does seem like there are not enough "modern" games that feature anything but stereotyped white males/females!

In my era, the golden age of the 80's, this was not so much of an issue. Games were abstract and tended to feature Spaceships, frogs, monkeys, fish, etc... and I recall seeing more young males of diverse colors into them back then. ..BUT, don't forget, the most popular videogame characters in history are YELLOW (Pac- Man) and ITALIAN ("MAH-RI-OH!")....
