Playstation Vita

Postby VideoGameCritic » June 7th, 2011, 7:47 pm

I was just reading up on the new Playstation Vita.

This one has some potential I think.  First off, this is a sexy machine, and I hear the controls are very conventional (as opposed to the often-maligned analog nub on the current PSP).

Obviously I like the idea of a cartridge slot instead of a disk reader, although it's very likely that Sony will heavily push the download capabilities.  And as we all know, Sony's on-line system is rock solid.

There's some innovation too!   Apparently there's a touch screen on the back of the thing (the front also is a touch screen).  They may be able to do some interesting things with that.

Obviously it will come down to the games.  Hopefully they will be fun and original, and not just scaled down PS3 titles.

The Playstation Vita will be better handheld than the current PSP. I hate the analog nub on the PSP!

The biggest negative I've seen is the confirmation several months back that this will lack tv/out features.

I'd love to hope for a hardware revision in the future that adds the feature, but if the touch screens catch on big with this device like they're hoping, there won't be any hope of adding in the feature.

In this day and age with the popularity of things like the Super Game Boy over the years, there is no excuse for a handheld without tv/out features (Even if it can't be universally used in every game because they heavily rely on a touch screen).

If I want to output something like the top screen of Ocarina of Time 3D to my television or a PSV launch game that doesn't use the touch screen during gameplay, I should have the option. Clearly a large percentage of their users feel this way with the success of the Super Game Boy, Game Boy Player, tv/out cables for the PSP, and various 3rd party modifications over the years to bring the feature to most every handheld out there.

Should be standard by now out of the box. People want to have the choice of playing their handheld game on a large screen when they're at home.

I agree w/ both Guy & Leo. The nub sux & I want to play on my TV. Otherwise I'm excited. Hopefully it won't be mostly downloadable games.

My biggest concern is the same issue I have with the PSP. It's that Sony will push games I would rather have on my PS3. A new Uncharted? I'd rather play it on my HDTV. A new Killzone? Why do I want this on a handheld?

That's why Nintendo did so well with the DS... it focused on portable games. Games meant to be played on the go. Yes, the PSP did this to some extent, but many of the big name games really were better suited for consoles.

I must be the only person on here who isn't particularly impressed with the Vita, i'm not too happy about Sony abadoing the PSP for a new system just like that, the PSP hardly has any support now as it is, over the next year or so, support will be nonexistent.

That's because interest among gamers has all but dried up for the system outside of Japan.

You can't blame Sony for not supporting a system that its consumers have largely left behind.

I think it was supported for at just as long as the DS, if not a bit longer. I'm not big on plunking down for another handheld, but the PSP had a good run.

Anyway, I'm excited for the Vita. My only concern is that the battery will not be removable, so you'll have to send it in if you need to replace it. I hate that with iPods, and I'll hate it with this.

I didn't realize that but it's definitely a big negative.  I don't want to be at the mercy of Sony when my system stops working.  I may pass on the Vita after all.

Yeah. It's a big negative to me, too. It might tip me toward the 3DS. Sony says it's because of the rear touch screen, but I don't know if that's true.
