I think you could argue that NONE of the modern games are pick-up-and-play, just by the fact that it takes so long between turning on the console and actually playing the game. 

With the Wii you need to pick the game from the menu screen, page through a bunch of legal screens and wait for it to load just to get to the title screen!

In the old days of cartridge you just popped in the thing and off you went.

This is what I like about the new Intelliviison game  Donkey Kong Arcade. All you need to do is plug it in and play!

I meant by controls and learning the game, it requires less time investment.

I think you guys are completely ignoring the long, drawn-out computer games of yesteryear.  Temple of Apshai (1979), for example.  And do you really think a text adventure like Zork is gonna have infinite replay value?  Not a chance.  There have always been "long, complicated" games and there have always been "short, simple, replayable" games.  There always will be.

Evidently none of you ever played floppy disk based games from the computers of yesteryear. Or perhaps you did, but wrote them off as not being pick-up and play.

Classic gaming for me!
I like SNES and before.

I tried to play Ninja Gaiden with a friend on his XBox 360, ugh...
the controller shaking and kill bill violence, not interesting to me.
Gloomy and dreary, not in a good way.

Modern games, do not even feel like a video game anymore... more like virtual movie simulation in 3D. Just move slowly around, scrolling 'till you're dizzy.

I don't get it, although the sports and racing looks appealing.

The genre is still pick up and play... but since it takes time to load, just call it...

This is an older thread, but nice to get input as membership changes and gaming continues to march on.

I enjoy lots of classic games and vintage hardware, but I am glad gaming continued to evolve. For instance, I have little appreciation for an original Gameboy. I would rather play the games on more modern portables or consoles. In a sense classic vs modern is unfair since you can pick and choose between so much as classic, both games and hardware. Every classic game or system was once modern, and every modern game and system will one day be classic (or will it?)

Modern, classic, mostly one or the other, both equally, or silly question? Any reasons or thoughts?

I'll play classic games from time to time, but for the most part I tend to lean more towards modern games.

I definitely play a lot more classic games than I do modern titles even though I usually eventually pick up the newest consoles. I guess I tend to find a lot of enjoyment from the older consoles because that is what I grew up with. I also like how games tended to be (overall) simpler back than. Still, I enjoy all kind of games and can't say one is definitely better than the other. I like a lot of parts from both modern and older consoles. At the end of the day, games are games and it doesn't really matter too much where I'm getting it from, I enjoy being immersed in games. I also love learning about the history of games and hearing about titles I've never heard of before. It is my favorite hobby, by far.

It seems like the line between classic and modern sometimes gets blurred since i've seen topics original Xbox and Gamecube games in the classic section, and I personally consider those to be modern games.
