Agreed critic, nintendo played it safe as you said with mario 3D land, it has an abundance of fairly liner stages, making it a quick gaming fix for portable fans. Nintendo knows how to rack up exclusive titles. And dispite what many say, I find the 3ds innovative. I didnt buy it until octber, but didnt have any games for it until mario 3d land came out, the 3d blew me away.

I feel sony should make titles appropriate for portable gaming. Small confined stages. Arcade style gameplay. And portable FPS's like doom work, but many of sonys titles, meh.

I shouldnt judge it though, sony might have one good title!

It's very expensive, doesn't appeal to casual gamers, and the memory units are ridiculously overpriced.  In today's economy, there is simply no room for that kind of absurd corporate greed.  $ony and the Vita are destined to fail.

I've never had any real interest in handhelds, but I noticed that the vast vast majority of the Vita's launch games are sequels to PS2/3 games rather than all new IP's that may be better suited or designed for a handheld.

But then Sony did similar things with the PSP.
Stephen has returned!

I want to know, do you think the Vita will blow our minds or fail with the same faite as the PSP?
We live in a strange world, when a handheld gaming device, that solds nearly 72 million units (and is still fully supported) is considered a fail...It's the fourth best-selling handheld system, how can that be "fail"?

I guess the Vita will sell in the same range, it all depends on the price and the games (more on the price as the 3DS proves, drop the price low enough and people will buy regardless of how many good games there are)

You all have some very justified hesitation, but they had me at "Bioshock Vita."

The new Ys game, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, and Escape Plan are also interesting.  Dave, I've read a few "first impressions" and watched some footage of the new Uncharted being played and people's only complaint is about some slight lacks in level design and they seem to agree that it's because it's not being overseen by Naughty Dog, NOT due to hardware limitations.  I'm still reserving judgement, but it seems solid so far.

@Stephen, I'd be interested to know where you live.  You mention that your entire county hasn't sold any PS3s and that may be true, but the system certainly isn't collecting dust in sales generally speaking.  Despite being more of a niche game system and selling less than the 360 in the U.S. for most sale quarters, if it wasn't for a year between the release of the 360 and PS3, the PS3 would currently be second in worldwide sales.  So unless you happen to live in 2007, I'd be surprised to hear it struggling so much.

I think the Vita will be more successful than the PSP in the long run, especially with a price drop in a couple years. I see the 3DS selling more overall, though, but it will be very close. The handheld gaming scene will still be Apple and Google's due to their technologies, however; especially in North America.
I'm not impressed with the Vita launch titles.  A new Hot Shots Game?  Another Lumines?  A scaled down Uncharted??  What does the Vita have to offer these games?  When I was playing Uncharted 3, I never once thought, "this is great, but I wish I could play it on the bus!"

If Sony was smart they'd release a game that you couldn't get for any other system.  Portable titles should be simple and addictive.  I still don't think Sony gets it.

What did the DS have to offer New Super Mario Bros.?  I think it will have a lot more "portable" titles than the PSP did, but I don't mind them bringing stuff like a new Uncharted either.  And while a lot of their big games are a part of existing franchises they're still unique titles that can't be found on the PS3 (for now anyways).  I expect the Vita to have an uphill climb but would be surprised if it didn't do relatively well.

The DS offered touch screen controls and dual screens. It also had GBA backwards compatibility, simple 2D games, and some of the best games on any system.

Well, one thing I know for sure is... the Vita will outsell the PSP. And that's all that really matters in the grand scheme of things. So it will be a success for Sony.

The 3DS on the other hand, WILL NEVER come close to outselling the DS. It probably won't even outsell the PSP. So I think in the end it will be considered a failure for Nintendo.

Well, the DS was the only new system that even HAD a 2D Super Mario game at the time, which was a pretty big deal.  Sony can only DREAM about having a title that good.

Also, New Super Mario Bros. was nicely suited to a portable with its short levels and simple gameplay.

Uncharted is one of my favorite franchises, but its long, cinematic sequences are not something to be enjoyed on the small screen.
