Your Favorite and Least Favorite Genre of Games?

Postby PSX1 » January 17th, 2012, 9:35 pm

Favorites:  Sports and RPGs.  Outside of gaming, I spend a lot of time watching and playing sports, and they also tend to be the games I enjoy most and the ones I'm best at.

Least favorite:  Fighting games.  Also, I hate to admit it, but I've never been a fan of shmups (especially vertical shooters).  Part of it is probably because I'm awful at games from both genres.  I've given plenty of them a chance, but even games like Street Fighter II and Radiant Silvergun don't get me all that excited.  In fact... I actually pretty much hate Street Fighter II because I get my ass kicked on even the lowest difficulty.

My favorite genre would be racing (Particularly if it's a simulation). My least favorite would be a close tie between Japanese RPG's and one on one fighters.

Never played a MMORPG, but that's because I believe I wouldn't enjoy them. Even if I did, the time sink they seem to represent is enough to keep me away. That's about the only genre I can think of that I've never experienced in some form.

I like:
Fighting
Racing
2D platformers
3D action-adventure
Hack-n-slash
Beat-em-ups
Shoot-em-ups/shmups
Arcade-style lightgun
First-person shooters
Third-person shooters
Hockey games (any)
Boxing games (any)
Some baseball games
Some basketball games
Some football games
Some dance/rhythm games
The occasional wrestling game
The occasional puzzle game
The occasional casino/card game
Video Pinball

I'm starting to get into:
Mech-based games
Survival horror

I've never really cared for:
RPG's
3D platformers
Stealth/Tactical
Most Simulations
Real-Time Strategy
Anything slow-paced in general
Most military-based games outside of fps/tps
Most games where you fly a helicopter (boring)
Most games with a female lead character (sorry)

Huh?  I don't see how that would affect the gameplay.  What difference does it make if the lead character is male or female?  That's strictly plot-related, not gameplay-related.

Also, I wish turn-based RPGs would make a comeback.  Chrono Trigger is my favorite game of all time, and I very much enjoy classic turn-based RPG games.

Final Fantasy VI is one of the greatest RPG of all times, and
its main character is a girl. Yet, it's hard to imagine Solid Snake
with boobs.

I actually prefer games with female lead characters.  When given the option, I almost always choose to play as a female character.

Anyways, lots of classic games have had female leads - Tomb Raider, Ms. Pac-Man, Metroid, Beyond Good & Evil, Phantasy Star, The Longest Journey, Final Fantasy VI, Perfect Dark, Shantae, and Phantasmagoria, to name a few.

I like when a game will give you the option to choose, a la Resident
Evil. Female lead characters can be a good thing, I was shocked
as a little boy when I found Samus was a woman though. I was
Samus, after all, and never knew I was actually a woman, lol. This was slightly
before puberty kicked in

I don't like:
Flight Simulations
Japanese "RPG"s
MMORPG
Those stupid "Simulators" that are so hugely popular - From "Farming Simulator" to "Bungee Jumping Simulator" or "Police Simulator", poorly made games
And stuff like Guitar Hero, Rock Band...i rather play a real Electric Guitar, it's way more fun.

I like pretty much everything else, First Person Shooter, Strategy, Jump n' Runs (2D preferred), sports games, racing games and classic point & click adventures.

And for the female character discussion: As a Woman i prefer to play female characters. It's a shame, even in the 21st Century it's not possible to choose a female character in all Games.
I find it extremely annoying that for example in Race Driver Grid everybody calls me "dude" and there aren't even any female sounding nicknames.

...and that's why I have problems getting into any of those games. Metroid is an exception, because before the Justin Bailey code, I didn't know Samus was a female. I thought for sure it was a guy because of the super cool outfit.

Also...
Indiana Jones > Lara Croft *Even if Lara is kinda sexy*

Goldeneye > Perfect Dark *Even if the graphics were better*

I don't play RPG's.
