Tempest (Atari 5200)

Postby VideoGameCritic » July 6th, 2013, 3:46 pm

I recently picked up Tempest (Atari 5200) from Atari Age.  As usual, the production values are terrific!  The colorful box and manual are made from high quality materials, and the style is consistent with the classic Atari games.  Collectors will LOVE it.

I tried the game last night and was disappointed.  I imagined the 5200 controller would be a good fit (no need to center it in this game) but it was a mess.  It moves on its own, and is very imprecise.  The graphics and sound were pretty good!

Then I discovered that the game supports the trak-ball controller.  I tried it out, and sure enough it worked like a dream!  Very responsive and precise.  This is definitely the way to play this game.  It probably raises the grade by two letters.

Stay tuned for full review.

The 5200 trackball does make this game a dream come true.  Look forward to the review and any shortcomings that you may find with it.  I love the game and how closely it feels like the original arcade - sans the spinner controller.
