My PS3 is dead - again
I have a backwards compatible model that kept going YLOD on me. After the 4th time, I decided to go ahead and do a fan mod. Basically where the fan spins faster to keep the system cooler. 6 months later, it's still going strong. The only drawback to a fan mod is that the system is louder. I've heard of people having pretty good luck with the Talismoon fans though. It might be worth checking into.

After the slim model was released in 2010(?), I'm not sure how anyone could go back to another launch model. That goes for PS3 and 360. The slims are quieter, use less energy, and most importantly are far more reliable. You don't even need to go for a super slim. Just get a 320 GB slim. You've complained in the past that you don't like having to delete old game saves in order to play new ones, so get a model that gives you a bunch more memory on the HDD. I'm wondering if much of your criticism of the PS3 stems from your circumstances of getting an unreliable version and then never upgrading. But you forgave the 360 for the RRoD, so it's anyone's guess why you're still down on the PS3.

The critic has never "forgiven" the 360 for the RROD, he's actually been pretty harsh on the system over it in his review of the 360.

I really don't understand keeping the large launch console simply because it is backward compatible. You already have a PS2 (and probably a PS1) so while it is nice being able to do it all on one console, I don't think it is worth all the money you are throwing into it to keep it alive. If you do decide to keep it, the fan mod, that kew brought up, is your best bet.

Plus certain PS2 titles have a tendency to suffer from really poor framerates when played on the PS3.

I prefer to keep my backwards compatible console over the others simply because it's more sought after by collectors and will more than likely be worth more. I've noticed on Ebay and Craigslist that prices for the 60gb backwards compatible models that have the emotion chip instead of using emulation generally sell for more.

they do but they are also extremely likely to break in the long run. Still, I'm no stranger to buying flimsy consoles so I understand (*cough*Turbografx 16 + CD attachment*cough*).

I plan on getting a new model this Christmas. Reliability trumps backwards compatibility.

Since I cancelled my PS4 pre-order, I altered my original plan of getting a cheap holiday super slim. I bought a used slim 320 GB based on recommendations as the most reliable and quiet model. It arrived last night, came in the original packaging and like new for $180 shipped from a seller on ebay. I'm very satisfied. Perhaps the Critic should consider the older slim model as a replacement.
