Indie game recommendations?

Postby NX17 » September 30th, 2015, 12:09 pm

Anyone here play a lot of indie games?

I'm fairly annoyed with the way big publishers have become, so I'm looking more into getting into these games. I've played a few before, but not heavily. Anyone have any favorites?

There are literally a ton of indie games so you must be aware that there is a bunch of mediocre games out there, i suggest you to go on steam greenlight to find some good games.

Much like the homebrew scene, there are great indie games to explore.

Here are my recommendations, which are all retro-themed games:

Rokko Chan (http://king-soukutu.com/flash/rokko.html) - 8-bit Mega Man clone with Mega Man X's dash mechanic; very fitting graphics and it's free with a catch being you can't download it, but rather only play it on the main site itself. I'd recommend using Joy2Key, an app that can replace keyboard controls to your USB controller's inputs.

Volgarr the Viking (http://www.volgarrtheviking.com/) - You like Rastan? You also like Super Ghouls N Ghosts? If so this is the game for you! Even though it has unlimited lives, there are sparse checkpoints to give the brilliant illusion of challenge. Even though you can purchase it online, the creators recently made it available for free; all you need is a blank disc and a Sega Dreamcast! Link for Dreamcast port is here: http://volgarr.rkd.zone/

Locomalito (http://www.locomalito.com/) - 8 great tributes to classic gaming from perhaps the best Spanish indie developer all for the cost of nothing! The most well-known game is Maldita Castilla, a pure Ghouls N Ghosts clone.

JoyMasher (http://joymasher.com/) - Oniken and Odallus: The Dark Call are pretty awesome tributes to 8-bit gaming that would fit right at home on the NES! Oniken is a pure action platformer while Odallus: The Dark Call is pure Castleviania.

Adventure in the Tower of Flight (http://store.steampowered.com/app/368830/) - Nice 8-bit tribute akin to Metroid and Kid Icarus; huge levels and great emphasis on flying!

Sister Skain (http://nyu-media.com/category/siter-skain/) - Three highly praised Japanese indie shumps! I've only played Kamui, which plays like Ray Force on steroids!

Mommy's Best Games (http://www.mommysbestgames.com/) - 4 solid action games from one of the better-considered Xbox Live Indie Games developers; Expolsionaide is similar Cybernator, Weapon of Choice is similar to Turrican with dual stick controls (which can be changed), Shoot 1UP is a vertical shmup with a horizontal display, and Game Type is a standard horizontal shmup.

Wide Pixel Games (http://widepixelgames.com/) - 4 arcade action games that were also Xbox Live Indie Games titles. All very solid games, IMO.

Crimson Clover: World Ignition (http://www.gog.com/game/crimzon_clover_world_ignition) - Mix Ray Force with a heavy dose of Cave and you have this intense hybrid that stacks up well against the latter's better offerings! It's also on Steam.

There are quite a few more games, but I don't want to make this list any bigger than it needs to be!

Thanks for the suggestions. There's so many indie games out there on Steam and otherwise, it's difficult to sort through all the junk.
