Only if it's the Japanese version, which is called the SG-1000 Mark III. The American Sega Master System has different sized cartridges. I just tried an SG-1000 card in my SMS and it didn't work.

Even though you're playing on a Mark III, you could use a pic of a real SG-1000 for that section

Thanks for the answer. I keep seeing different answers on websites so I was never sure.

That's the problem with the Internet Kevin - even the people who have no idea like to chime in.
Some people just can't help themselves.

Well, it's complicated because the Master System can play SG-1000 games -- all the necessary stuff is there on the motherboard, and F-16 Fighting Falcon uses the SG-1000 display mode. It's just that the US BIOS locks them out, and the pinouts on the cart slot have been changed as well.

But if you have an adapter and you solder in a region-free BIOS replacement, you can play an original SG-1000 game on your SMS. Or better yet, just get a flash cart, which handles all the bootup stuff for you, and will play any SG-1000 game except The Castle (which has extra RAM on board).

The other problem, unfortunately, is that the colors aren't correct when playing SG-1000 games on SMS or Mark III hardware; they're darker than they're supposed to be, and while normally that's merely cosmetic, on one or two games it renders them nearly unplayable since you can't see certain enemies that blend into the (dark) background. Here's a link that discusses it a bit:

http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthread ... ter-System

Hustle Chumy is one game that apparently becomes unplayable on a Mark III/SMS. That problem can't be fixed -- it's a design flaw in the Mark III/SMS -- so the only ways to play a SG-1000 game with the right palette are:

1) buy a SG-1000 (or SC-3000, the computer version)
2) buy a Dina 2-in-1 (not a good idea since they're notoriously flimsy)
3) emulation
4) play it on ColecoVision, since around half the SG-1000 library has been ported to that platform (the SG-1000 and CV have almost identical hardware, though porting games between them is non-trivial)
5) use a flash cart on the Game Gear that can preload the SG-1000 palette (since the GG has a much larger palette than the SMS) and set the game up with the correct colors

Phew! It's a shame that the CV has such awful controllers, since otherwise all these weird palette issues could be obviated by just playing on the CV. But, c'est la vie.

BTW Chack'n Pop is my pick for best SG-1000 game; it's far, far better than the terrible NES port, and is surprisingly close to the arcade game. I also like Ninja Princess, The Castle, Elevator Action, and that weird port of the Pitfall II arcade game that's only available on SG-1000 (and now the ColecoVision).

Great post Goldenband. Personally I would love a Mark 2 (Detachable controllers) but the chances of getting one to work on a PAL TV are slim to none.

I've played a few games on emulation and I would probably add Star Jacker to the list of recommendations I found that an original shoot em up for the time period.

I would have avoided disgusting connotations with the word "wang" if I were the author of the review about Dragon Wang and I also would have not used the word that was used to describe its second boss in that review.

Mario500 is this all you ever post on the forums ?
You know the Critics review style by now you've been a member long enough, I don't understand why you continuously raise this issue.
It's like me writing to Fox TV complaining there is too much blood in The Walking Dead. If I didn't like watching Zombies eating people I wouldn't watch it.

I agree with Sut. Mario500, you have only a few posts in the new forum, and about half are complaints on the relatively low level of profanity on the reviews. That's Dave's style. Dave is amazingly open about inviting feedback on his reviews, everything from his silly icons to grammar to political correctness to the actual content and grades, to really just talking about the game. At some point, if all you do is chime in about his use of mild profanity, its just falling on deaf ears there is so much more to discuss.
