Ah yes the Amiga could belt out some great sample based tunes. Bitmap Brothers titles always had strong intro tunes. I think the ST's AY chip has aged better and has more soul but I'm extremely biased ;)

That's in the Spectrum. The ST has Yamaha's YM-branded version.

Regardless of name, I've never liked the ST's sound; it's so incongruous coming out of a 16-bit system, and even in an 8-bit system like the Spectrum, the chip's tones sound cheap and tacky to me next to those of the SID, the NES's APU, and even the Atari 800's POKEY. That said, a few developers got some amazingly clear samples out of the ST - Lankhor comes to mind.

I think Twisted Metal series had a lot of good soundtracks, especially Twisted Metal 2.

Tons of great game soundtracks, BUT only one was so good that it actually inspired me to track down the soundtrack in order to listen to the music again when I was done playing it:

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

As far as real songs, Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, and the early Tony Hawk games all got me into certain bands and made me end up buying their music. I also bought a Bang Camaro album due to liking them in the Guitar Hero games.

Not the most interesting list - a lot of these are pretty obvious. A baker's dozen seemed like a good place to stop. No particular order, except for the top spot:

Streets of Rage 2 (Megadrive/Genesis) (if you put a gun to my head, this would be my favorite)
Mega Man 2 (NES)
Double Dragon (NES)
Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest (NES)
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (Saturn/PS1)
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Megadrive/Genesis)
Shovel Knight (PC/WiiU/3DS)
Hotline: Miami (PC/PS3)
Final Fantasy Tactics (PS1)
Final Fantasy 7 (PS1)
No More Heroes (Wii)
Super Meat Boy (PC/XBox360)
Silent Hill 2 (PS2)

With genial composers like Motoaki Takenouchi, Yuzo Koshiro, Masahiko Yoshimura, Shigenori Kamiya and Masato Nakamura, Genesis/Mega Drive, brought us the best soundtracks ever made. They are in the same level of the soundtracks of John Willians. The are a lot of more genial soundtrack in the console, in games like After Burner 2, Rolling Thunder 2, Road Rash, Comix Zone, Monster World IV, Ethernal Champions, Quackshot and dozens of others. I have a top 95 of the gratest soundtracks in my blog segaclassics (blogger), with the links to the videos.
I have the Sega CD, Saturn, Nintendo 64, Wii and played many games of consoles like NES, snes, neo geo, PS2, PS3 and Xbox360, but I never heard anything like the compositions I heard on my Genesis.
