Newgrounds Flash Portal Reviews!

Postby TEM » October 28th, 2006, 11:31 pm

I hope to complete my collection to include all Newgrounds Flash Games (minus casino games).  So far, I have reviewed Alien Hominid, Domo-Kun Angry Smashfest!, Draw-Play and The Legend of Zelda: The Lampshade of No Real Significance.

Please submit feedback so I can change my writing style if I have to.

This is a DOC file of my review collection so far.  Enjoy!  (the formatting and pictures don't work on this thread)

LOL I swear, back when the title of the DS Zelda (i.e. "Phantom Hourglass") was first revealed I heard someone make that exact joke title.  I didn't know it was a real game.  That's hilarious.

Now I have to play it.

I'm currently writing reviews for $wag, Bloodly Blades and Pico's School.  They should all be up in a few days.

Nice job on the reviews.  Keep 'em coming along with the links to the flash games if you would.

I'm going to be doing my reviews post by post to save some hassle.  A screenshot of each game will be attached.

The Legacy of Pliskin: Part 2  A

11/5/06

This game improves on the original in almost every conceivable way.  In this edition, Pliskin ends up in an old mansion after falling through the time portal at the end of the first game in a lovely little rip of The Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver’s finale.  Rufus has taken control over a mysterious religious cult, and through several time paradoxes attempts to destroy Pliskin once and for all.  The game mechanics are for the most part the same as before: point-and-click and find your way out.  But now, the puzzles are much more complex.  You need to interact with the game with everything from mashing keys to user-guided speech.  You can also combine two separate items to produce a new one, a great addition which is required to beat the game.  You are also helped along by The Old Man (or Tom…get it?) who is not quite what he seems.  The addition of voice acting was pure genius, especially considering it’s top-notch and the best I’ve ever heard in a game, Flash or console.  The game is split into five or six levels, and there are many unlockables to collect.  The sheer depth of this game is outstanding.  There’s even an homage to the original Pliskin in one scene, complete with the old animation!  Speaking of which, the animations are completely redone.  Rufus and Pliskin look much better than in the last game, and the new characters look fantastic.  The humour is superior to Domo-Kun Angry Smashfest!’s in that it’s much smarter and contains tons of dramatic irony.  For example, if Pliskin gets caught by a guard, he says, “What?  That’s not supposed to happen!  It must be a glitch in the actionscript.  Let’s try that again!”  The game pokes fun at the Monkey Island insult-based fighting system, Soul Reaver’s ending, Final Fantasy turn-based action, you name it.  This is quality humour in a quality game that could have some definite potential in the PC market.  All hail Pliskin! http://newgrounds.com/portal/view/329275
