Nice Graph. However its about unit sales, not number of titles - so a handful of popular 3rd party games can skew it. Also, the overall number of unit sales (both total and 1st party) is pretty small as well, which can lead to opinions formed on relatively small things.

The Gamecube overrated? Since when?

It's the 3rd most popular system of it's generation, which places it next to the Turbografx, Atari 7800, and Odyssey 2.

And it destroys all of them.

It benefits from being in the last generation where there wasn't a huge divide between AAA and mid-tier releases. And the last before consoles became handicapped PCs. Japan was still a force to be reckoned with, Western developers had their acts together, and without DLC or patches, there was an obscene amount of money going towards just spoiling the player.

I've never met anyone who's played every single genuinely good game for the system. It just wasn't possible for most people.

Not if you intended to still have a personal life outside of your gaming.

Completely agree with you on Mario Sunshine. Who the hell wants to play a game where your main objective is to clean? Cleaning is a chore. And I don't like to do chores.

I still think it was a solid system though. It was the last Nintendo console to largely support sports titles, so I never really needed a PS2 or Xbox (Though I currently have all three hooked up and at the ready). It was also the final Nintendo system to lack any sort of gimmick.

man, Super Mario sunshine has to be the most loved/hated game I know of. You'll find people who love it for the exploration aspect of it. Then you'll find people like me who think the whole game is a chore.

Haha, unfortunately my wife doesn't count playing Sunshine as helping her with chores, nor that part in Skyward Sword (unreal, my new S8 had "sword" come up automatically after "skyward") where Link cleans that lady's house.

I think Super Mario Sunshine is a great game. The graphics are outstanding, the story line has depth, and it is a different game and follows a different path. Perhaps not unlike Yoshi's Island and Super Mario Bros. 2. And I really liked the bonus minigames.

With Bintendo, it's all about the franchises. With that in mind, the GC did great. Meele is considered still as "the" best Smash game, double Dash is also one of the best, 1000 Year Door is the go to Paper Mario for a lot of people, and Metroid Prime was exceptionally well done. Wind waker gets a lot of love these days, and even Sunshine* is beloved by many players.

I have always had Nintendo consoles, but nevered owned more than 7-8 games per console. they are just way more concerned about put out 1-2 quality games for each franchise per console. That's been their pattern.

*since we're talking about it, I thought Sunshine was really good, and since I SUCK at 3D platformers, the FLUDD was actually very helpful for me. Problem is, I sucked af the non-FLUDD stages.

Great points from everyone.

For me it is dependability. My GameCube still does what I ask of it. Picked up several old Playstation II systems over the years that maybe only could play a PS I game and not a PS II or they just do not play at all.

Reading thru old gaming magazines there were products for the Playstation to cool it down. Essentially a big fan attachment. Were the first Playstations prone to overheating? Not picking on Sony we all know about the Xbox power chord overheating and the ring of death.

Never seem to read much negative about Nintendo hardware other than specs for their systems or why they chose carts over discs then went to mini discs instead of full size.

Overall the GameCube seems like it is underrated to me.
