Yeah, other reviews seem to be on par with yours. I guess every sequel will be compared to the original, which was one of the most innovative platformers ever. On paper, it sounds like a disaster, but Yoshis Island is one of my top 5 games of all time.

Good review. Saw one typo: "there's too much junk to collect".

I found this to be the best Yoshi game since the original Yoshi's Island, but that may just be because of the mediocrity of the Yoshi games in between the two.

I disagree that there are too many collectibles. A lot of them are hidden surprisingly well and it helps add some challenge to a game that would be too easy otherwise. Plus you can always ignore them if you don't want to collect them.

This is the best Yoshi game since the SNES one but I still think that one is a lot better.

Good review. This game is very pretty. I love the visuals and it is a solid platformer. Definitely a more kid friendly platformer, but the later levels have a lot to offer platforming veterans as well.

How does the health work? I haven't played it, but there's obviously no baby Mario and a timer....

Soon as you look at the screenshot you can tell it's a Nintendo game. Not sure if that's a good thing or not.

I'm not sure what's confusing about the health system. It's a simple ring of hearts that encircles your character. You can collect hearts from the "?" clouds or by passing a checkpoint. If you lose them all, you die.

The hearts also serve as a collectible, just like they did in the SNES game.

I think once you stop thinking of this game as a Mario-style platformer, and more like a slow-paced quest-type game, it gets better. Getting through each level is insanely easy, but finding every hidden object is a major challenge, even in the first world.

I've been playing this game more lately and I really like it. Graphically it is simply gorgeous. Unfortunately the Wii U's CPU is not capable of running this game at an acceptable level of performance. It's really quite sad because the Xbox 360 and PS3 could've handled this game without breaking a sweat. Specifically the frame rate really struggles on the overworld map and in some of the later levels there are visible frame drops and stutters that are very annoying, to the point of ruining the enjoyment of the game.

I would not be opposed to Nintendo re-releasing this title on a more modern system with more powerful hardware, I'm just not sure the Switch has the power to run this game properly either.
