Playing video games in lieu of watching Star Wars prequels

Postby wur » December 24th, 2017, 2:12 pm

After seeing The Phantom Menace, I never bothered to watch the other two Star Wars prequels. The first one made me physically ill. ( a friend of mine once said if he had any magical power, it would have been to enter the Phantom Menace film and decapitate Jarjar ISIS-style, then to receive a standing ovation from the audience.)

I'm curious--would it be worthwhile to play any video games based on the prequel movies , to get a sense of the story of the prequels without the horrible acting? I'm really enjoying the new Star Wars movies, although I'm not a big Star Wars fan. Wanted to fill in the gaps of my knowledge, the least painful way possible. So, which prequel-based games should I play?

Really, though, just watch the movies. It's much less of a time sink, you'll get a better sense of what actually happened than you will from any game, and you'll at least get to see some decent battle scenes. You've already made it through the worst one, and Revenge of the Sith isn't awful. What do you have to lose?

Agreed Stalvern.III was very good and underrated. Revenge of The Sith really the only good prequel but kind of depressing. Still waiting to see the Last Jedi. Really looking forward to it. I missed the Force awakens but now must rent it to be ready for TLJ. Peeps are really mixed on TLJ. Unfortunately I’ve read some spoilers on it. But it sounds great to me. A friend posted on Facebook..... “Star Wars is over for us now. It now belongs to the younger generation. Fantastic film but kind of sad?” From what I have read He summed it up perfectly. I luved his words with a 1977 and 2017 pic of Mark Hamil in both films. Made me a little sad but I thought it was a beautiful tribute to one of the all time greats! And Merry Christmas!

The funny thing about the prequels is the movies are awful (sorry, episode 3 is only slightly less awful than 1 and 2), but there were some great games.

Lego Star Wars probably is the best to fill you in on plot and it’s a solid game. Jedi Power Battles (Dreamcast not playstation) is a decent game that goes with the first prequel. And episode 3 has a fun game both on the DS as a brawler and on the Xbox as an action game.

Star Wars: Battle For Naboo and Episode I racer for N64 are fantastic. Also agree on Lego Star Wars.

Just watch them in Machete order and they're entirely tolerable.

Watch them 4, 5, 2, 3, 6. Don't watch 1. Treat 2 and 3 like they're the "flashbacks" after Empire Strikes Back to explain if Darth Vader really is Luke and Leia's father. Fantastic when watched in this order.

I’ve read about the Machete order and everyone praises it. I will finally try this myself.

The best parts are with this order:
1) You notice Luke at the beginning of Return of the Jedi is acting just like Anakin from the end of "Revenge of the Sith." He even force chokes a couple guards and tells Jaba not to defy him in the first scenes.

2) Midechlorines are not any kind of important and are barely even mentioned.

3) A child never falls in love with an adult he ends up with, because that is super gross.

4) Obi Wan always looks like Obi Wan.

5) Jar Jar is in, like, 3 minutes of film.

6) All the surprises remain surprises for any "first time" viewers you watch with (Luke and Leia aren't born and named until the end of Episode 5, right before Return if the Jedi).

I believe I also read it lets Palpatine's reveal remain something of a surprise, but have only watched in this order once (about to start again tonight actually), so I'm hazy on that one.

I never understood the hullabaloo over the "Machete order". How exactly are Episodes II and III better when coming into them right after The Empire Strikes Back? I can't think of a more unflattering contrast.
