Black Ops 4

Postby VideoGameCritic » May 17th, 2018, 6:47 pm

I used to be a big fan of the Black Ops series. The single-player campaign was always exciting and the multiplayer could keep you playing indefinitely. But now the series is a shadow of its former self.

According to this article, Activision is ditching the single player and adding a battle royale mode. So, they are dispensing with its trademark feature of the series and tacking on the "flavor of the month" mode - for full price of course.

So they are being both lazy and derivative. I'll pass on this one. It's a sad state of affairs.

I read a very interesting article (Stats Show How Rarely Game Campaigns Are Played) on this topic on TrueAchievements - https://www.trueachievements.com/n32450/exclusive-stats-show-how-rarely-game-campaigns-are-played . While there may be a bit of bias because this is just based on people registered to their site as well as being tied to achievements in some cases, I'm sure the trends are fairly accurate. If anything, I'm sure companies like Activision have even more detailed stats. Reading something like "(for Call of Duty 3) 74.01% of players completed basic training while only 25.67% finished the campaign" is interesting but also sad. It was fascinating to see game series like Bioshock, Fallout, Halo, and others not even reach 40% story participation (average). I know for me, no campaign means no purchase, and while it may result in fewer sales, it all boils down to profitability and I'm sure in that regard this will be the right decision for them.

I know people on this website have issues with patches, DLC, online requirements, etc. however, multiplayer focused games are for me, the worst part of gaming in the most recent generation.
