With all due respect, SML has never been an A+ game. When I think of games that are deserving of that score, I think of Mario 3, or Link to the Past, or Resident Evil 4. The games that were so memorable that they stick with you! Even years after playing them, you still have the memories of having played it. Even after beating it, in 1990, I forgot nearly everything about it, almost immediately! Now, Link’s Awakening? THAT could be an A+ game because it manages to stand toe-to-toe with the rest of the series, while offering a unique experience! Mario Land was drab, unoriginal, unresponsive, and a bit boring. At best, it was a B-.

I'm glad you enjoyed Super Mario Land, & look forward to a review of its sequel. (Maybe?)

Critic, I'm so glad you appreciated Super Mario Land for what it was intended to be. Many critics (and even my best friend who LOVED the sequel) complained about its weird physics, change from fireball to "superball", and overall surreality. It was designed by Gunpei Yokoi, the man behind Game-and-Watch, the Virtual Boy, and even the D-PAD!!!! I still find it a wonderful, somewhat darker take on the early series, and the ancient themes of each "world" really fascinate, as does the neat music. I can't wait for your review of 6 Golden Coins now!!!

Huzzah for Game Boy Classic Reviews!

SML is a fun game, though my issue with it was that World 2 and 3 always seemed to not be as enjoyable as 1 or 4 overall. The music more than made up for it, though... ;-)

Duck Tales 1 GB was a decent game, though I preferred the sequel over the first GB one. Love the music though!

The real problem with Super Mario Land is how short it is. You can blow through the whole thing in under half an hour without breaking a sweat.

I played Super Mario Land on the OG Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and the Game Boy Advance, and in all cases I thought the controls were very responsive. SML was both classic Super Mario Bros. and unique with elements that pioneered the gameplay variety of every Super Mario iteration ever since. I believe the game only had three music tracks, but they were all catchy and memorable.

Super Mario Land is awesome, it's simple, short and so much fun, I love how it try new things with the Mario formula like the bombing koopas and the ball bouncing attack, the shooting stages are the best part, the music is great too.

eneuman96 wrote:Yeah, the A+ for Super Mario Land seems a tad overblown. It's a perfectly competent game, but just about every subsequent portable Mario platformer blows it out of the water. I recommend the sequel Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins as well as the main four Wario Land games (the first of which is confusingly called Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3), which in my opinion have aged better and are more sophisticated.

I completely agree that SML 2 is a WAY better game with more variety and a better/more modern presentation. The subsequent Wario games (starting with SML 3) just didn't do it for me. I don't like them and I find the character unlikable which I am sure is by design.

I agree! Also, very nice to see you review some more classic Game Boy games! Some other recommendations to play (for classic Game Boy / short & sweet):

- Kirby's Dream Land (platformer)
- Kid Dracula (platformer)
- Revenge of the Gator (pinball)
- Kirby's Block Ball (breakout clone)
